From Yamaha today.....

Nice to see him back but what a wasted talent. He had the World at his feet back in the late 90's. Still should be good for WSS

Gobert joins Yamaha GMT94

20/2/2006

Yamaha GMT94 has signed Australian rider Anthony Gobert to ride its YZF-R6 in the opening rounds of the Supersport World Championship.

The eight-time world superbike race winner will substitute for the injured David Checa. Checa crashed in testing last week and broke his arm, forcing him out of the opening races in Qatar and Australia. After undergoing a successful operation on Friday the Spaniard is expected to return to the saddle by the end of March, leaving the team needing a replacement rider for the opening two races.

Well, that class is gonna be a little different then! Wonder if he still has the same riding style?

I'm looking forward to that, too bad we won't get any coverage of it here in the US. The Go Show is a great rider and from everything I have read he has kicked a heroin habit, is clean and has decided he wants to race again. I give him all the support in the world and hope he continues racing and continues being clean. He's only 31 so he should still be plenty fast once he shakes the dust out. Here's to the Aussies in WSS, Brookes, Parkes and Gobert (if only for two races).

You forgot Curtain, Ooost!
Hope Brooksey does well. If youre optimistic you could say he's won every WSS race he's ever competed in.... or he's never lost.
1 win from 1 race, well done Josh!
Anyway on a 749R in what is currently jap four territory in his first full season race, I'd be happy with a top ten finish.

Say all you want but good on him for getting clean, regardless of how fast he is on a bike.

Christ, I knew he'd smoked a bit of dope in his time (anyone remember Lucky Strike giving him the boot) but heroin? Well if he's kicked it great but if he hasn't I don't think he'd get that one through the urine test!!! lol

At least he made the effort, right?
As if being a world championship racer wouldn't be enough of a high.

I was actually watching old SBK races on tape the other day. In fact i watched the whole of the 94 season review, the 99 review and the 2000 review. I was thinking how there have been times when he was so fast. No i mean REALLY fast, like faster than Foggy. On his Day Gobert was one of the fastest men in the world, literally. Remember Laguna Seca 99? or the opening round of the 2000 season on the Bimota? or how about the last round of the 2000 season at Brands Hatch?(the one that was supposed to take place at Imola but was swapped for Brands because it would have clashed with some beer festival) John Reynolds won race one ahead of Bayliss and Walker(it was a wet race), Gobert crashed out but was lapping like 2secs quicker than anyone else.

Ive never really like the guy to be honest but, without a doubt he is one of the fastest guys on the planet and prob one of those guys who you could put in the class of "the fastest riders EVER but NEVER to win a world title".

Absolutely RallyeRon, anyone remember when he had the wildcard ride in 1993 at Philip Island. Whooped Russells ... (on his way to the WSB crown at the time). He had to slow up to crawl on the last lap to allow Russell to pass him. Point made by Gobert me thinks!

PS sorry about the duplication of post. I have a crazy index finger! lol

Ooost we get the coverage. speed will show wss on tuesday after the race weekend. set yer vcr, tevo or whatever. last year they did anyway.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>i dont mean anything bad by it ... just he still got a long way to go, and if he really wants this hes gotta get his mind onto it
No I agree, just saying it's quite the task to kick a habit like that as is without adding preparing for World Championship competition as well.

Yeah, apparently he's been clean for about a year or something like that. It resurfaced recently after www.superbikeplanet.com wrote an article on how he had been arrested for driving without a license to go buy heroin. They neglected to tell everyone it happened between 6 months and a year ago but was just recently brought up on charges as his court date occurred. His mother wrote the 'Soup a letter explaining the timeframe and went on to say the Go Show has cleaned up his act.

I've always liked Anthony. I still crack up when I hear the story of the time he allegedly pissed in Hodgson's helmet. He is one of the fastest guys racing has ever seen. Had he remained focused throughout his career I have no doubt he would have won a 500cc title.

I'll have to check the Speed website and check it out. Unfortunately for me my local carrier doesn't provide Speed so I'll have to give my brother a call to tape it for me.
