Thanks Mental, a good topic and a timely one.
Most of the contributions here are spot on.
Jumkie' s are as comprehensive as usual. Johnny K and goatlad, could perhaps have put aside ill -feeling for perhaps the duration of this thread.
My main memories are
Qatar 2007, the first win.
Catalunya 2007- the first race-long duel with Rossi and won
2011-redemption
PI 2012?- going out in style.
Still 2007 was the time of revelation, because none of us were quite sure how good he was. His crash-littered 2006 left big doubts, and as 2007 progressed, the doubts were gradually swept aside.
Qatar, the first win was significant, but not conclusive. After around 5 rounds with 3 wins it started to dawn on people that perhaps we were witnessing a phenomenom .Many protested that the Ducati,s speed gave an unfair advantage , but wise analysts noted that Capirossi , a man of known ability, could not use this supposed advantage.
Laguna seca 2011-pass on Jorge on the outside and also a tricky pass on Pedrosa.
Then Catalunyafinally swept all doubts aside. There was no significant speed advantage.Stoner fought tooth and nail with Rossi and won. A new racing god was anointed. (Am I getting carried away?)
As many have noted, we are seeing the last episode of the fastest rider of a generation (Krop), possibly the fastest ever? It is a time to savour and a time to reflect. It has all passed too quickly. A shame that the personality could not continue to deal with the motogp circus, while the "racer" was more than capable of doing the same for another decade. However, there is a glimmer of hope............if motogp has sorted out its transition to new regulations ,if the racing becomes closer, if the field gets bigger, if electronics are wound back to a a basic spec ecu so that the rider makes a bigger difference and if Casey has done all the fishing, boating, camping and horse-riding he can stomach, I think there is a real possibility he will be back in 3 years. You read it here first! haha
Again thanks all for your positive inputs. We ARE seeing the end of an era, an era where the best rider has won (mostly) and where the results have not been
doctored by overnight specials etc. (pun intended!).
Special thanks to Jumkie for his tireless esssays over the past few years , helping to educate the boppers and refute the myths about Stoners success. Todays quote about CS winning on a CRT bike in 2007-10 was pure gold! You,re an enigma......part Solomon, part cheap-drunk.
Also thanks to Krop. From 2006 I found his pre-race and post-race "essays" the best reporting of motogp on the internet. Krop was also one of the first to openly state that Stoner was a rider of exceptional talent and a future champion from very early on.
For those that are not familiar with Krops website, I strongly recommend a visit to his site and his archives from 2007.....

"It was as close to perfection as you will ever see on a racetrack. And Casey Stoner is only 21, with a contract for at least another two years with Ducati. These could be very, very long years for the competition. "
Thanks again David. Great colourful coverage of the drama of each race. Somtimes, i had to go back and watch the race again to see the drama you recounted in your words, but which I apparently missed on first viewing.
