Edwards and Toseland Should...

Its a shame that it never occurred to anyone at Yamaha that perhaps Edwards and Toseland would have been a great asset to their WSBK title hopes if they had been at Magny Cour and both CAN be an asset if they ride at Portimao. Both are great superbike riders and neither have much invested in the motogp world championship, especially Toseland. If I were Massimo Merigali I would have taken either or both from tech 3 for Portimao as payment for Ben Spies.

Yamaha already had the MotoGP constructors on a virtual lock before Portugal, and with both Rossi and Lorenzo pretty safe from either Stoner or Pedrosaf or the Riders Championship, Tech 3 wasn't/isn't really needed to help them (not like they would ever finish ahead of stoner/pedrosa under normal circumstances).

The schedule conflicts between the WSBK and GP rounds is probably what made this impractical, but
in their place in the Grand Prix races Yamaha could have put in some young kids (a la esparago for pramac) just to see scope out new talent and fill the grid.

The only issue would be whether or not edwards or toseland could get up to speed fast enough on the R1 to even finish ahead of haga, which is interesting in itself. Simoncelli managed to go decently fast for a non-superbike guy, but edwards and toseland never rode a recent yamaha sbk, let alone the crossplane (although the m1 is supposed to be 'similar' in engine characteristics)

Any thoughts?

Yeah, my thought is it would be a big deal logistically for negligible potential gain... like Yamaha I say, "why bother?"

It would be a fun idea, and it would certainly help Ben if Edwards and Toseland were able to relegate Haga to fourth, but realistically, those guys have got to ride for their sponsors. The sponsors wouldn't be terribly happy if they were riding injured or not riding at all during the Valencia GP.

Unfortunately, their personal sponsors and Tech 3's team sponsors would probably nix the idea.

nice idea but the lawyers and bean counters would kill this before it grew wings..

Nope, I'd love to see him win the title as I am a big fan of Haga. However if Ben wins it I would be happy too. Either way, I want the best man to win, with out the aid of mechanical failures or other riders getting involved.

+1 I agree with your points here. I want to see the best man win all on their own, although Haga has already recieved ample amount of help from his teammate and mechanicals this year.

I suppose you all are right, sponsors and their lawyers would have been the roadblock to this in the end, but if the reports are true and Edwards is the Yamaha backed man on tech 3 then the factory could have potentially pulled more weight then the sponsors. Since Toseland gets his checks signed by poncharal himself the chances of any negotiating room their are slim.

I do want Spies to win the championship, but it is incredibly difficult to root against a talented rider who has been working for 10+ years for this moment versus a rookie who has time on his side. Championships in any class do mean a lot, but whenever its not the Premier series and riders step up, it complicates the championship with too many variables. The old 'if so and so didn't go to GP's so and so wouldn't have won just kills any championship stat tracking for me in wsbk. ITs still a good show though. Portimao should be intense, unless ben feks it up in race one.

Spies should win a WSBK title before moving to MotoGp. As it would be a tough order to win the title in his rookie year, I suppose Spies to move to MotoGP in 2011..

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team has confirmed to Crash.net that it will allow James Toseland to make an early R1 debut, by taking part in the Portimao World Superbike test.

The post-race test takes place after the WSBK season finale is held at the Portuguese track on October 23-25 - the same weekend that Toseland will be riding in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

With the 2009 MotoGP season not concluding until November 8, fellow WSBK returnee Chris Vermeulen had his request to test at Portimao turned down by Suzuki.

However, since Toseland is remaining part of the Yamaha 'family', Tech 3 has agreed to let the former double WSBK champion get his first taste of R1 machinery before his final MotoGP ride for the French team at Valencia.

Can anyone tell me why Tech3 is so bad? I mean you'd think Colin and James would get better results seeing how they too are on Yamahas. I know it ain't nowhere near a factory ride, but is it that far off? Or does the team just stinks? Maybe it's the riders that stink?

No I hope real bad that Haga finally after all these years gets his World Title. The dude rode like a champ all year especially after his injuries. Plus the who Ben Spies juggernaut he's had to contend with. ALso Max Biaggi nipping at his heels as well with a bike that most likely will be the one to beat next year. Hell of a year for Haga and again he really does deserve it.
