I said earlier this year that Lorenzo would have to get slower before he got faster.
Well he has gotten slower so he's halfway there.
What I see Lorenzo doing is exactly what Rossi did his 1st year on 500's.
Rossi was fast but he crashed a lot.
Towards the end of the year he figured it and started winning.
Each crash taught him more about the bike.
I could be wrong but I believe that is where Lorenzo is right now.
Have you seen the way he runs right through the pack to get to the front.
Rossi's the only other one I see that has that ability.
I think that towards the end of the year he will be back up front again and be dominant in the future

I expect Dani to have a real whine next year as Dovi gets along with that 800cc Honda way better than Nicky. And I think Dani might be in for a nasty surprise.
As long as HRC does play a fair game

BTW, who will become HRC's devoted son next year ?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Son of Doohan @ Jul 22 2008, 11:50 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Lorenzo's proven he's super quick on factory bikes, Dovi's proven he's very quick on non-factory bikes. Put Dovi on a factory honda and he'll beat Lorenzo - providing repsol honda pull their finger out and sort their bike for someone other than Pedrosa.

Dovi's only been riding non-factory bikes for half a season and its not like its a coincedence he didn't get a ride quite as desirable as Lorenzo.

I actually happen to like how Andrea looks in his hats. So there.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Austin @ Jul 22 2008, 07:35 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>I really like both riders but I voted for Lorenzo. Dovi has been consistently quick all season on the customer Honda and I expect him to be a consistent podium finisher when he moves to the Repsol team for 2009. But when Lorenzo isn't injured, he's shown pure brilliance. I don't think I've ever seen this sort of speed out of a rookie. But as has been said, he's been crashing a lot lately and his results have been inconsistent. The flashes of brilliance still do it for me, nod goes to Jorge.
Well I've seen Toni Elias come up with flashes of brilliance...when he needed to. Think Estoril 2006. BUT does that make him a great rider?

I voted Dovi, for a number of reasons. It's hard to tell because they've not had equivalently good machinery before, but Dovi is not only great on the bike, but also a hugely intelligent kid who knows how to use his head. He's extremely level headed and he's clever enough and yes, even brave enough to ease up on the throttle when he knows his experience isn't up to it...as in Sachsenring in the rain this year. Sure it's cool to take risks, but not when you end up diving into the gravel from a great height on a regular basis.
I think Lorenzo is amazing. I think he's immensely talented and very brave (or just plain dumb...i mean the dude raced with two broken ankles. Some people I know would sit at home with their leg up for a week for just a sprain!!!) I love to watch him ride, I loved his cockiness at the beginning of the season when he thought he was going to take on Vale and beat him no problem, and I also think it's sweet how until last year it was so obvious he wanted to be Valentino Rossi when he grew up. BUT the kid's got problems in his head. He's got a psychiatrist following him all the time and an acting coach to teach him how to perform in interviews etc. The kid is strong only when he's riding, otherwise he seems to fall apart. And unless something happens fast I don't think he's going to be around that long because the pressure of the paddock is going to get to him. Mentally he hasn't got it.
So in the long run...I'd say Dovi will have the upper hand.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Bikergirl @ Jul 23 2008, 09:51 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Mentally he hasn't got it.

I disagree with that claim. It is possible that psychology could be his downfall, but that is true of every racer. Lorenzo seems a very clever guy and has a very intelligent approach to what hes doing. The actual riding might be rich with mistakes at the moment, and that is a worry but as has been mentioned before we've seen similar antics from some of the best riders we can think of.

And oh yea, ELias' flashes of brilliance didn't yeild two world championships.

Obviously both guys are on a learning curve, but to date its Dovi for me by a country mile.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Bikergirl @ Jul 23 2008, 10:06 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Of course you do.

Well yeah i am a Lorenzo fan afterall, i've been watching him and Dovi directly compete since 2003.

Of course you have. Just like many others here after all.

I think Dovi (by a whisker). He's had a brilliant first season on a non factory bike. He seems to be getting stronger each outing.

As for Lorenzo, I said it earlier this year and Germany reinforced my opinion that wet races will be his Achilles Heel! I'm amazed I haven't seen any posts referring to him as "lose it" or "lob it" Lorenzo. He's pretty good at both those things!

Lorenzo, I don't buy the "inferior 250cc Honda" theory. Yeah the Honda has always been less powerful than the Aprilia but that's cause they didn't use rotative valve admission, Aprilia did it and with the extra grunt got a less friendly power output, Honda played the better handling card and Pedrosa and Kato managed to win with it so IMO Dovi is just not that good.
He seems smarter and better wet weather rider than Lorenzo but that's it. Lorenzo learns by crashing, and if he doesn't kill himself he's gonna get REALLY quick as he gets more experience.
If Dovi gets the HRC bike next season it will be an interesting fight for sure.
