Dovi to Gresini...?

Why, when a team is looking for a rider, especially an Italian rider, is Marco Melandri always left out of the conversation. Is he toxic in the GP paddock.I can understand him and Ducati never hooking up again, but he seems a natural for some of the other rides. Is he not a marketable Italian any longer.

Its a fair question, but I think the guy has moved on. He's been a bit critical of the series, and I think the man has a point. I'd say its probably a 'out of sight out of mind' thing. Also, Melandri is signed up. Though I think he is a fantastic talent, and dare I say again, very similar to Rossi. Did you follow the BSB this year? Anybody who didn't won't get this next statement, but I think John Hopkins is the best rider still not signed. I don't think the best rider available is the first thing these teams think about.

Jum, just curious.. how'd you get all the BSB stuff? is there a feed i'm missing.. or did you torrent it or something? i'd love to download the whole season and give it a watch.. I follow(ed) Hopkins on twitter and kind of kept up, but no full races.. although I never really looked for em..

I of course saw the last few laps someone posted here that determined the championship.. I'm sure every race wasn't that amazing but I'm interested
<

Truent, torrents buddy. There are some great battles all throughout the season. The last Silverstone race one is perhaps my favorite.

IMO Dovi will go to Tech 3

It's time for Dovi to flip Honda the middle finger and go get a podium finish on the Yam to step out of their shadow,it will be the making of him, maybe even start to gain some alien status (the boy can ride!!)

As for the gresini seat way too much physiological stuff would be going on up stairs in Dovis head always being compared to Marco,he could .... gold and win the championship but in the eyes of the fans Marco would of done it better

OOOHHHH Great thought Chopperman Biaggi back in GP on the gresini ride and finishing ahead of Rossi that would spice things up inthe paddock a bit

Marco Melandri had a great run at the end of 2005 and into 2006. It was the following year in 2007 when he suffered a near fatal mental blow as his supposed "dream" move to the Ducati factory team alongside Stoner turned into a nightmare! "An italian rider on an italian bike" is what Ducati prefers. With Stoner winning races and always up front, Melandri was feeling the heat and the cold shoulder from Ducati as he sat in the very back of the grid on his factory bike. His career and consistency has never been the same since. I'm a huge Melandri fan and I hated to see him go out like that. In WSBK, he shows, along with Checa and Biaggi, why MotoGP was once his gig.

Oh,no please dont let this happen. That would be a waste of a good bike. Dovi proved he isn't a real front runner in 3 seasons and i think he had enough time to show his true pace. I was his fan in 250 and when he came to motogp and Honda but later i changed my opinion of him.

Someone else like Melandri or Aoyama or anyone else could be better.

That can be said for everyone who has ridden the Ducati. I do not think Marco is damaged goods. I am convinced that on a factory Honda or Yamaha, he could finish top 4.

True...but we ARE talking about Marco Melandri and why he is not considered for MotoGP. Marco may have never been on a Honda or Yamaha "factory" bike in Motogp, but he has been on a Honda and a Yamaha in MotoGP, hell....even a Kawi (Hayate) in 2009 and he was competitive; however, it never turned into a factory ride for those manufacturers. Why? I don't know? What I DO know is that he was consistent, fast, and confident until the Ducati move. I've met him and he's a great guy and rider, but top 4 in today's lineup? No, he was on a Honda in 2010 and couldn't come to grips with it. Factory or not, he wasn't even remotely competitive, otherwise they would have kept him another year. He is damaged goods in the MotoGP paddock. I hope soon he'll prove me wrong, but until then............

Losper, good posts. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks Jumkie, it's hard to find a good forum for MotoGP. I like to talk about up-to-the-second news about MotoGP, because I've met almost all of them over the years, including techs and crew chiefs, as well as the MotoGP race commentators Gavin Emmett and Nick Harris. It would be a dream job to be any part of the MotoGP show. Even more so to ride ANY one of the bikes! Peace

Melandri was on Gresini's Honda in 2007. He went to Ducati in 2008.

His situation in 2007 was kinda screwed -- Honda made noises about providing him factory support, but it never turned out that way during the season. Not that it would have made much difference with the 2007 Honda. He did OK -- 5th in the standings -- but did not flatter the bike.

Yes, thanks for the correction. It was definitely 2008 because Casey had just won the title, so at the time was the perfect situation to get into: italian rider, italian factory bike with the current MotoGP title. What a kick in the nads it turned out to be! Mika Kallio said it best when he got to ride Stoner's Ducati while he was out with his mystery illness, "The magic between Ducati and Stoner comes from Stoner."

While not denying that Stoner could very well be the most talented rider in MotoGP, Kallio arrived at Ducati when they'd started with the stressed airbox. Stoner's wins from 2007-2010 were 10, 6, 4, 3.

The thing about Melandri is that he was never very consistent, and setup troubles (like he had with the M1 2003-2004) sent him into a tizzy.

If I remember correctly, Melandri inherited the factory spec RC211V from Gibernau that Gibs inherited from Kato. I believe Melandri had a factory spec Honda in 2006 and 2007. Someone please clarify if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty certain HRC continued to back that seat until Melandri left for Ducati.

i also remember that , i think in 2005 and 2006 he had full factory support, not so much in 2007 and none in 2010

Melandri was given a factory spec bike in 06. I recall him wanting to keep the 05 bike at the start of the season because he didn't like the feel from the new bikes front end, Honda drew the line after Jerez. Except for Hayden though everyone had the same hardware from Honda by mid season in 06. In 07 i think he had a factory bike but it was such a disaster a lot of parts got changed very quickly... but only in the Repsol camp, with the works team struggling so much its not much of a surprise that they didn't have much support for Marco and the 'other' tyres.

Not in 2005, that was Melandri's first year with the team. Gibs still had the factory bike.

I recall Honda putting Melandri and Pedrosa on the same equipment, but I don't recall if that was the same as what was given to Elias, Stoner, and Tamada. But what you're describing for 2007 is what I remember. Panic at Honda with Repsol continually swapping bits and bobs in and out while Melandri, Elias, Nakano, and Checa weren't given anything until HRC started to figure out which end was up.

Melandri?

Last turn Phillip Island. Last lap

One handed powerslide to win the race. On a Honda.

That's what I'm talking about! 2006 Phillip Island last lap final corner. Melandri, one-handed powerslide, smoking the rear tire, while putting up a peace symbol with the left hand! It was a ballsy decision to do that, but that's how confident he was that day on that bike! I loved it!
