Donington Camping With Kids

Hi

I have been an avid watcher of Moto GP since the days of Barry Sheene!! (wasn't even called Moto GP back then), and my now 9 year old son has been watching it with me for the last couple of seasons.

Anyway, this year I promissed to take him to Donington for the British GP and booked weekend tickets including camping for the 2 of us.

Since receiving my tickets I have heard worryng stories of pretty much mayhem at the campsite - including shower blocks and portaloo blocks being set on fire.

While not expecting it to be exactly peaceful on the campsite - I am not prepared to risk my son in a situation which may be dangerous.

Am I worrying unnecessarily?
What precautions can I take?
Should I make other arrangements? (Day trip is not practical due to 800 mile round trip!).

Any guidance or help, particularly from those who camp at Donington with Kids would be appreciated.

Thanks

Alan

Hi Alan,

Welcome to the site - enjoy your stay here!

Whilst I'm not teh biggest fan of the donny camp site (and always say I'll never camp there again) - I'd have no problem taking your son if I was you. The campsite in itself is very friendly, saturday night just tends to be people getting out their barbies and having a few beers. Its relativley quiet too, I've heard stories of folk taking cb90's and doing stunts etc and generally acting like pricks, but not witnessed anything like that (camped 5 or 6 times now).

There is a severe lack of toilets/showers for the 40,000 campers though, and teh ques get quite long for a shower (45mins sometimes).......never seen them on fire mind!

The worst bit is getting of the bloody thing on Sunday............thats where the mayhem occurs....6 hours just to get of a campsite is riveting!

I dont have kids, but there always seems to be plenty around............good luck & have fun!
Ben.

hey, yeah welcome,

donny is interestin, gettin into the site is fine marshalls etc to guide but gettin out is very difficult as has been said, can take very long time, dunno if u were thinkin of driving or riding, but personally i would say drive coz its safer to get out, altho bikes can go up middle of cars in queues have seen cars pull out many a time on front of bikes to swop lanes while queuing, so riders at risk, may be better for ur son to drive thats all im thinking

but yeah site itself fine, my parents have taken me, so i wouldnt worry bout it, if they think its k, then it must be!!!

the only precautions i would say is obv dont leave valuables lying around, espec in tents etc, but that goes without saying really

other than that, enjoy it, am very jealous as would love to go see it, hopefully get there next season tho again... hope weather holds out for u, we got rather wet when we went!!!

also, just remembered dony has had face lift, havent seen it myself, but is supposed to be better than last season, so bodes well for u

hope that helps

hi there
i went to donny last year an to b honest it was a total farce, but that was due to the rain rain rain rain oh and did i mention the rain.anyway the queues from the camp site to the track were a bit heavy but thats the ups an down with camping.if i was u id cut your loss an try an get a b&b for the night.then go home after the sundays racing, the getting out isnt a major prob really its just a case of first to the car etc.go to the race enjoy it then make up your mind for future visits.after last year i said i wasn,t going again but i,d be a fool not to go.its a great day

Thanks guys, I feel much happier thanks to your posts. I, like everybody else am praying for sunshine. Still as the great Billy Connolly once said "There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing!!"

Thanks to the advice I will now plan to stay over till Monday before heading home.

By the way - I got all of my tickets in one envolope, but as I was ordering admission, camping and grandstand transfers I had to go to Donny direct rather than ticketmaster - might make a difference??

See you there!

Alan

I'm only 14 years old myself, but what's the worst that can happen? I doubt something bad will happen at all and you're perfectly safe so just go on enjoy yourselves.

If you like my mrs and I can camp with you, we're arriving friday pm and leaving monday as we're flying from Jersey. I too have received my camping tickets but not my entry tickets and I went through ticketmaster, I think they'll be sent to us the week before the event. We've never been to Donny but camped at Le Mans for the gp, the frenchies think nothing of revving their bikes at 4am so it may be wise to take some ear plugs.

Too right mate!!!

hahahaha!!!!!!

Not even sure if im guna go this year. Not because of the weather(it would be a one-in-hundred chance of getting that weather again) but because mainly of lack of mates who wanna go and money too. The plus side is that i ccan watch it in the comfort of my own home i suppose!
