Special Tires for CRT in 2013?

Monday, October 15, 2012

Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta is determined in 2013 to close the competition gap between prototypes and Claiming Rule Teams bikes, a source of embarrassment for the premier class and the new CRT formula this year.

Most CRT teams are expected to take advantage of spec Magneti Marelli electronic control units next season to help achieve that goal. And Italian media revealed Friday that a proposal has been made to Bridgestone to build special tires for CRT bikes next season, too.

Few CRT riders have used the harder-compound rear tire that Bridgestone has offered the premier class at races this season, effectively eliminating rear tire choice for the production-based teams and increasing their already sizable disadvantage to prototype bikes. So Bridgestoe may produce a softer compound for CRT bikes next season, giving them two true rear-tire choices.

Prototypes will not be allowed to choose this "extra-soft" tire, according to the Italian report.

If the intent is to even the performance gap by allowing the slower bikes a softer option--to paraphrase When Harry Met Sally, "We'll have what she's having,".

Prototype MotoGP bikes have pneumatic valves and feature near F-1 style engine technology. Softer tires on a Moto2 cast off chassis with a production engine might knock a few tenths off a lap time, but it won't even come close to putting a CRT in the draft of a true MotoGP bike.

Depending on how they spin the new tire, this enhancement of The Show could turn the field upside down.

What's next, an extra 250cc?

special tyres still wont help a 20km/h speed disadvantage, and an extra soft tyre will just go to pieces anyway. i call .........

maybe good for the ioda team who have trouble getting above 200hp and hence warming the tyre.

as long as its just a softer compound i think it won't do a thing, like digger said it would probably be eaten by the prototypes if used.

would be funny though if its a totally new construction that gave them an instant second per lap.

a lot of pissing about just to make wsbk into moto1 and wsbk into p(production)sbk

Can we get TTXGP and Mecanno on board with Tonka Toys hmm nice colour Schemes ?

arrrrrrgh

The fact is the Aprilia WSBK goes faster because there is no engine limit, and even with 12 (the CRT allocation) they can't wind the power into them to the point where they'll ever be on par with a GP bike.

Is it really worth all this .... just so Carmen can ..... slap Honda?

The word from Bridgestone:

Nothing has been confirmed, we are just looking at different options with

Dorna and the safety commission at the moment. Things should be finalised at

Valencia. The most likely scenario is that CRT's will not have specially

built tyres, rather CRT's and prototype bikes would have access to different

compound options at each circuit to suit their individual performance

Thanks, Krop.

But wrapping gooey rubber around one of the 'standard' carcases will do little more than make a 2 lap qualifying tire, right? Won't B'stone need to rework the whole tire to make a significantly softer compound last? Well, that's the same as having two distinct tire specifications!

We all know that the current tires are built with an eye to reducing performance. How much faster will the CRT rubber be? 1, 2, 5 seconds a lap? And who decides how much faster, Uncle Ezzy? If you think Ezzy tinkering with Rossi's career (Sorry, Krop, I still think he has his finger in the pie!) cheapened the sport, just wait 'till a 'Special Tire' CRT wins a race over a clearly faster prototype.

"You fast guys get the control tire brick. Have fun making it work! LOL"

"You CRTard riders get the good stuff!"

Colin - ".... yea!" - and goes on to win the title!

That might make for great entertainment but what will he have really achieved?

Dorna has put themselves between a rock and a hard place with these turd CRT's. They are looking for the perception of speed to fool the sheep. They are hoping that no one will notice the bikes running 3-5 seconds off pace after the first 5 laps. Just give them a ....... qualifier, the sheep will look at the lineup and say wow, those CRT's are coming along. Im not sure how many people paid attention to the poll from crash.net about where to draw the line on the new regs, but close to 2/3rds of the respondents said Moto GP must keep the factories at all costs. Very simple poll, but also very telling. 65% of the fans know what draws them to Moto GP. Unobtainable factory machines that they can only dream about.

So CRTs will have access to special compounds, while the <for-want-of-a-better-word> Prototypes get a standard set?

Is Lewis Carroll writing the rulebook?

The imaginary rabbit is...

With so many different rules and options for different bikes, engines, companies and so on they should just call it "race what you brung" (bad spelling to appeal to market),

Let Honda and Yamaha slug it out in the 50 million plus class and everyone else can have a hoot.

Its a packet of poo tickets at the moment.

This doesn't seem unfair to me. The CRTs have less power, and therefore could make use of a softer compound without wearing the tyre out. At present there are two options which are designed to give the prototype riders a choice. Therefore the CRT riders almost always if not always go for the softer option. That means that the CRT teams effectively have no real choice.

Introducing a softer tyre for CRTs therefore doesn't seem like favouritism to me. It appears that they've realised that the current tyre rules put CRTs at a disadvantage, and they're moving to even things up.

If they really wanted to benefit the CRTs in comparison to prototypes, all they need to do is design and bring tyres which give the CRTs a reasonable choice of strategy, but where the soft is far too soft for the prototypes. I.e. reverse the current situation. Which they're not doing.

My opinion on the CRTs:
  1. []Allow for other tyre manufacturers to participate with modified single tyre rules.(Kalex bikes all use x and y tyres, Suters  use a and b tyres etc)
[]Allow for KERS systems (KTM - 125 was doing research on this), superchargers or what ever the teams deem needed to make up the power difference.
[]Since there is no cheating, teams  can challenge and switch engines/ECU's

I can see that these changes would give the CRT teams the opportunity to field faster bikes. But, all of these changes would make the bikes much more expensive to develop to their full potential. I'm not sure this is what they were thinking of when Dorma came up with CRTs.
