MotoGP have moved to change the way they award penalty points, in the aftermath of Valentino Rossi’s punishment for the collision between him and Marc Marquez at Sepang.

Rossi was awarded three points at Sepang, which joined his one existing point awarded at Misano and set to expire in September. However, under the old regulations, the accumulation of a further single point between Misano and the remaining three points expiring in October would have resulted in a further back-of-the-grid penalty for the Italian.

However, under the new rules, the nine-time champion (and any other rider in a similar situation) will now have to gather an additional four points on top of their three before a further punishment is doled out – in this case, a pit lane start.

With the system designed to punish riders for individual incidents and not to repeatedly sanction them for the same offence, the new regs are an attempt by race control to implement the points in the manner they were designed to.

Whilst I can see the intention of the rule change - that being you can only be punished once I am not sure that I fully agree in terms of points accumulation as to now state that you cannot be punished at a level where you have already been punished does not allow punishment to occur where a rider accumulates another point to fully replace a point that had rolled out (so to speak).

In the example used in the article, the concern is that now VR needs to accumulate 3 further points to reach the 7 of the next punishment but what happens whereby heis point for being slow on the racing line expires (12 months after accumulated) as he then drops to 3 points (Sepang) but by reading the article, another slow on racing line is a get out of jail free card

Thoughts?

EDIT:
Whilst the obvious connection can be drawn, let us not forget that there are riders aside from VR who have been penalised throughout 2015 who are now on the same path in terms of future transgressions

I have to say the old system didn't make much sense to me. I agree with others that it was hastily cobbled together by Dorna to make it look like they cared about MM's trangressions, him being their golden boy at the time.
