Call it rose glasses if you like but 2006 was more exciting that 2005 or 2004. Some (Rossi fans) will argue that 2004 was an amazing season because Rossi managed to win the thing in his first go on a Yamaha and I can't argue that. But the season was dull, who was a serious threat to his title? Gibs? Please. In 2005 Gibs fell off but Melandri picked up the pace and to a lesser extent, so did Hayden. However both riders were too inconsistent to seriously challenge Rossi outside the occasional win. In either season, did anyone lead the series outside Rossi? I don't have the stats but I'm pretty confident he went wire to wire in both seasons, winning comfortably.
In 2006 you had three different riders leading the championship at various points in the season, a multitude of different winners (I count six but I could be forgetting someone) and the championship was won by someone who entered the final race sitting second in points, something that hadn't been done since the early 90s if I remember correctly. Then you look at the individual races like Qatar, Mugello, Assen and Estoril and those are some of the best battles of the 990cc era. Sure, 2004 and 2005 had some great battles but I don't think either season had four great battles in one season and they certainly didn't have the championship drama that 2006 had.
Rossi being a genius on the M1 doesn't constitute the best racing of the era, Curvey. It just makes him the GOAT.
Hard to argue with any of that
