Ben Spies Best Rookie 2010

.

I know what you mean, he's very no nonesense isn't he. Just gets on with it, he doesn't really do anything wrong but i find him a little boring. II think he'll grow into himself a bit, but he's never gonna be an Edwards or a Hayden

I expect if MGP racing had been covered in '80s like it is now - you'd have found Kenny Roberts

"boring as well". He was never the kind of guy who'd worry about having a flashy new helmet

to get all the fan-girls in a tizzy, and wasn't the kind of guy who winked and made kissy faces

to the camera or pranced around in nimrod costumes when he won a championship. He just went

out there and plugged away and won races. A very boring guy for "the fans".

haha..can't say im not guilty of the same...hated hayden for a year
<

Yep. Me too.

I actually like him now.

Does this qualify me as a bopper?

I was going to say its an American thing, but the more i thought about it, it is a bike racer thing. Until Rossi started riding around in costumes, and now Jorge copying him, who, before the last 10 years, was the bombastic, look at me self promoter in bike racing. When you think of it,besides those 2, they are all pretty much the same. Some are a little more self indulged than others, but do their thing on Sunday and are very comfortable out of the spotlight. If your looking for entertainment off the bike, all but 2 are going to be boring. I would venture to guess that the majority of riders find Rossi and Lorenzo's skits and costumes silly

How can anyone not like that guy?

He just gets on that M1 and gets the job done.

No whining, no ........, no nothing.

Never seen AMA so didnt know anything about him prior to SBK.

Definitely a fan now !

Texans for the most part are very cool likable people

Wait till my boy Big Ben Spies starts stuffing bikes inside
<
he'll find some haters im sure

Ben is awesome, and I can't wait to see what he can do on a factory ride next year. On a random note, his dad posts some interesting stuff on the WERA boards (club racing organization) with the best username: "HadBen"

I may well have done, who knows. But don't be fooled, this isn't all about being a joker and full of Latin charm like Rossi. I like Pedrosa and Stoner with their less fussy approaches and i liked Lorenzo before he got good at the PR stuff. I like Bens attitude, i think he looks great on the bike and i think he's a good addition to the top ranks of GP. But he hasn't made me into a fan yet, so despite admiring him i still don't find myself cheering him on, yet.

I'm not so sure about that. Barry Sheene was a joker off the bike and Randy Mamola often did silly things for the crowds. Obviously Rossi has gone a step further with all that kind of stuff, but a lot of the riders have a bit of it in them, look at Nicky's dance on the Laguna podium in his first year.

Spies has had a very good year, but to be honest, i was expecting a little more. I thought 5th was achievable, and still is, but i dont think he gets there. Next year on the factory bike, i expect he will run more towards the front and supplant Dovi on sheer performance, but will find those last 4, tough nuts to crack. He has shown 2 qualities that are very good and one that isnt. He is very late on the brakes, good, and turns very good times on used up tires, good. His 1st 4-5 laps , bad , he doesnt seem to get going and thats a problem. You can be out of contention in a half a lap in this series. Will a factory bike make that go away.i certainly hope so

The post-race BATTLE of the SUPER EGOS at Motegi was just this side of embarrassing. Both these ......s are sooooo self-obsessed. Every on-tv moment is all about "Look at me! No, NO! Not him! LOOK AT ME!!"

did you see the way Rossi attempted to get some attention when everyone was celebrating Lorenzo's WC at Malaysia, looked like he set himself up withhis 46 board then grabbed a cameraman but the guy was drifting towards Lorenzo in no time.

Yeah, because no-ones interested in Rossi are they?

He just has to grab a bit of attention whenever he can.

GO SPIES! GO TEXAS!!

I wouldn't even mind him beating Rossi. Like some earlier have said, I usually start disliking riders who can beat Rossi...ha.
<

Unfortunately, thats proberbly about the time I'll start disliking him.

I cant seem to help myself. Once they start giving Rossi any hassle I find myself turning against them.

Same thing each season..Stoner, hayden etc and now Lorenzo.

What can I say, I'm a shallow, complicated person

And very honest. Wow dude, I read your post several times and really couldn't believe it. I don't think in the scope of real life this stuff really matters, though we argue to the hilt around here. Respect to you for admitting it.

About the topic. While Spies was in the AMA, I can't really say I was a fan. But I admit I disliked Mladin quite a bit, and it gave me pleasure that he lost to Ben, because seeing Matt frown was hilarious. I only started to warm up to Spies in WSBK. First, I started rooting for him simply because he was American. But then I started paying more attention to his skill and character. His personality can be compared to cardboard, bland as hell, but the man has integrity of character and his skill was really quite amazing. I sill have all 09 WSBK races recorded. Perhaps my favorite is race one Assen (but this is not the only one that showcases Ben's skill). Being that Haslam is my 2nd favorite rider, seeing them race close in a series of turns, in perfect synchronicity was poetry. He goes on to put a clean pass on Haga for the win. It was here I think that I became an instant fan. Since then I think Edwards has really helped him in the personality department. Another thing that Spies has impressed me with is his willingness to be friends with his rivals. Him and Haga were good friends off the track and fierce rivals on it, I respect that.

Yeah, I feel the same way about him.

I actually rarely followed AMA during his time there because him and Mladin always seemed to clear out way to easy and it was more or less boring to watch. Now in hindsight though, it's interesting to see the difference in talent and race craft of a guy who can hang with the top guys in MotoGP and the rest of the AMA field..It was no wonder he obliterated everyone in the AMA..ha.

But yes, once he came into WSBK and showed what he can do I became an instant fan. I'm glad he did take the plunge.
