Ben Spies secured the coveted Rookie of the Year crown in yesterday’s Australian MotoGP race.

The Texan though admitted he’d not been overly concerned with claiming the honour, his fifth place in Phillip Island also ensuring he will finish top non-factory rider in this year’s premier class series.

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider held third until lap eight when he lost three places as a result of a mistake in the braking zone for turn one.

Spies was then embroiled in a close tussle with San Carlo Gresini Honda rider Marco Simoncelli.

Confident he would be stronger on worn tyres, Spies pounced on lap 23 to secure his 11th top six finish in a splendid first full season.

The 26-year-old said: “I hate to burst everybody’s bubble but the rookie thing s not something I really set out to do. If I was second I wouldn’t have been upset because everybody was riding well. I’m focused on my own deal and worried about everybody finishing in front of me, and not who has been finishing behind me. It’s an achievement but not something I’ll go and have a beer for. I’m just happy to be fighting and we had a good race.”

For the full story on Casey Stoner’s fourth successive Phillip Island success and the future prospects of Spies, see Wednesday’s MCN (October 20).

Spies was impressive this year. I think Roger & Tom thought he wouldn't amount to .....

pointless prize he had jackshit to beat

Yeah, just the raining 250 champ, the former 250 champ & runner up among others. I suppose all that experience they had on the exact same circuits was also a disadvantage.

Due to me not getting AMA on my tv i really did not have an opinion . Bearing in mind the bike he has been riding i will admit he has done better than i expected. He deserves the award and i look forward to watching him achieve great things in the future.

My advice for the future is. Dont block pass hayden or get to close. Stay at least 3 feet away while passing, his fans can't take the pressure

I guess your TV machine doesn't get WSBK either.

And that's good advice. Though judging from his hard close battles I've seen, I don't think it will be much of a problem as he respects the craft enough not to go making cheap moves selling out his integrity in desperation for a moment of glory.

I think Ben has been very impressive this year. Jumkie may well be prone to a lot of exaggeration but i didn't expect him to do quite as well as he has. I think he's a very worthy factory rider and good results will come his way.

It has been great to watch Spies progress from being a top AMA rider who expressed little desire to race abroad, to a WSBK champion, and now to being possibly Moto GP's most promising prospect. This guy seems to be tough in every way: he bested Mladin three years running; emerged as the top WSBK rider in his first year with a new team, factory, and calendar; now he has looked very good in his rookie year on 800cc machines that are supposed to be difficult for SBK riders to adapt to.

I can't wait to see him battle Rossi on a factory bike next year. It's time for the ultimate test!

Nope, thats why you dont see me in the superbike thread.,

Also consider that he's slaughtered his team mate, scoring 163 points to Colin's 90, to date.

Spies is the real deal fo shoooo!

Bopppers unite we have our next can't do wrong to worship mindlessly. Spies, you may now feel free to kick Italians and Spaniards IN THE FACE! during your block passes. You can no longer do wrong.

Just leave Killio alone, you might make him quit.

Spies did what most people expected him to do this year, and he still has chance to better himself on the standings.

He will be a great top runner next year or/and the years after that.

How can anyone not like that guy?

He just gets on that M1 and gets the job done.

No whining, no ........, no nothing.

Never seen AMA so didnt know anything about him prior to SBK.

Definitely a fan now !

I know what you mean, he's very no nonesense isn't he. Just gets on with it, he doesn't really do anything wrong but i find him a little boring. II think he'll grow into himself a bit, but he's never gonna be an Edwards or a Hayden

Definetly..I remember his first title win against Mat those years ago. I knew the dude was good, but when he moved to wsbk and dominated I couldn't believe it. Can't wait to see what he can do next season! Congrats Ben!

Unfortunately, thats proberbly about the time I'll start disliking him.

I cant seem to help myself. Once they start giving Rossi any hassle I find myself turning against them.

Same thing each season..Stoner, hayden etc and now Lorenzo.

What can I say, I'm a shallow, complicated person
