With everybody healthy and unencumbered, and most riders claiming it to a favorite track, at least on paper, this should be one of the best GPs of the season.

Numb3rs: Australian Grand Prix LINK

Wednesday, 13 October 2010 17:08 by Luca Bologna

With two of the three championships already decided, Lorenzo winning in Motogp and Elias in Moto2, only the 125 title wil still be in play at the always exciting Phillip Island.

Here are all the relevant numbers ahead of the Australian Grand Prix:

25 – Casey Stoner celebrates his 25th birthday on the day qualifying takes place at

Phillip Island.

24 - Spanish riders have won the last twenty-four 125cc Grand Prix races. The last

non-Spanish winner in the 125cc class was Andrea Iannone at the Catalan Grand Prix

last year. This is the longest sequence of successive 125cc GP wins by one nation in the

62-year history of Grand Prix racing.

22 – This will bee the 22nd time the Australian GP is is held at Phillip Island, and we hope there are still many more years to come.

21 – Valentino Rossi’s victory at Sepang was his 21st since the introduction of the

800cc capacity limit in MotoGP. This is just one victory less than Casey Stoner, who is

the most successful rider of the 800cc era in terms of Grand Prix wins.

11 – The victory by Marc Marquez at the Malaysian GP was the eleventh victory of the

year in the 125cc class by Derbi riders. This is the highest number of wins achieved in a

single season by Derbi in the 125cc class.

8 – Australian riders have taken eight premier-class victories in their home Grand Prix;

Wayne Gardner at Phillip Island in 1989 and 1990, Mick Doohan at Eastern Creek in 1992

& 1995 and Phillip Island in 1998, Casey Stoner for the last three years at Phillip Island.

6 years 161 days – The length of time between Roberto Rolfo’s last GP win in

the 250cc class, at Jerez in 2004, and his Moto2 victory in Malaysia.

5 – Following his win in Malaysia, Marc Marquez moves back to the top of the 125cc

championship standings. This is the fifth time this year that the leadership of the world

championship classification has changed in the 125cc class.

3 - Since the four-stroke MotoGP formula was introduced in 2002, Ducati and Honda

have each had three MotoGP wins at Phillip Island and Yamaha have had two victories.

3 – Phillip Island is one of just three current circuits where Yamaha have not had a win

since the introduction of the 800cc capacity limit; the other two are Valencia and Aragon.

Rossi all the way. He is back and will give us a boring race by being miles ahead.

I recon Loenzo will be second if he stays on.

stoner will lose the front

dani is the one im interested in, will he be back, will he be fast ??

VR

Dovi-still strong

Hayden-Hard to believe I know-yes indeed, he can turn it around PI

Jorge

Dani-if back healthy

Stoner in Kitty litter

4 in a row ...... its a hard ask.

I'd be watching out for Hayden too ..... and I'd be insisting he goes the hard tyres if I was his fan!!

1. stoner

2. lorenzo

3. rossi

4. dovi

5. spies

pedrosa is supposed to race but i think it's a bridge to far for any kind of result this early...

Rossi for the win.

I would like to see Stoner keep his streak to make PI like Rossi did with Mugello...but I would rather see Rossi beat Lorenzo.

Lorenzo in the dirt...because now he will race hard since he has nothing to lose. It will be his first race with no points this season taking away the chance to have the most points in a MotoGP class season (needs 61 points to beat Rossi's 373)

Stoner is the man to beat at P.I. He has won all races there since 2007.

Ducati is the bike to beat. Always at the top at P.I. and not only with Stoner.

Hayden could be a nice surprise.

Rossi will be strong.

Lorenzo will be pressure-free.

Then Dovi, Spies...
<

Pity Pedrobot will not be 100%.

Spoiler: the rain, as usual.

That didn't even come to my mind. Two seconds and a win are relatively 'easy' for Lorenzo if he rides like he has all season. Yet with Dovizioso's recent form, Rossi's shoulder issue seemingly sorted, and Stoner having a good record at PI and usually quick at Valencia when he doesn't crash it, those second places can still be elusive. Lorenzo goes well in Portugal though, so that might be his win right there. Pedrosa's current state is sadly a bonus to Lorenzo's cause. It will be interesting to see how Lorenzo performs at maximum, with both his chances of winning-but also crashing-rising a good deal.

Topping Rossi's total will no doubt be very important to Lorenzo, even if the grand significance of the top total record is quite limited seeing as we have only been at an 18 race season for a handful of years. Rossi's 367 in 2005 is in some ways more impressive than the 373, since it was done with only 17 races. He also had a DNF that year which doesn't shouldn't make the feat more impressive since it is a blemish, but it helps put it into perspective. Doohan's 80% season was probably the most impressive feat of the Modern Grand Prix era from a statistical standpoint.

Still fun stuff with races to go no matter what happens, and thats always a good thing.

I think the Yamahas will win at the Island this year now that they have comparable power.

Stoner also had a 3 win streak going into Qatar......and that ended. Maybe Rossi will kill this streak of Stoner's as well...I guess Stoner should have left Mugello alone last year!!
