Given the high temperature, doesn't conventional wisdom say the tire choice would be the hard option? Why wasn't the hard tire working?

My opinion would be the softest tire you can use that will last the entire race is the correct choice. In the case they pretty much all thought the soft would last and it did. No one dropped off late in the race. Does that mean Michelin gave them the 3 correct compounds? I'd say no. If the soft was able to last the entire race for everyone than maybe they didn't bring the correct options. It was thought that there would be a drop off after 15 laps but that didn't happen.

The harder compound resulted in the rear to spin up more than the grippier soft which on balance was therefore deemed to have more durability.

I forget which rider, but one of them did 40 FP laps on a soft, so was confident it would last the race. A big determining factor is how recently (if at all) the track has been repaved and how recently other races have been run, leaving a degree of rubber, and how clean or dirty the track is.
