18 races next year?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>Valentino Rossi, one of three MotoGP riders currently racing while injured - with a further two recovering away from the racetrack - believes that plans to increase the existing 17 round calendar are "too much".

Rossi and fellow Italians Loris Capirossi and Marco Melandri have been forced to ride injured at both Assen and Donington Park in order to keep their title hopes alive. Rossi fractured his wrist and ankle in practice at Assen, while Capirossi and Melandri were hospitalised with upper body injuries after a turn one accident a week earlier at Catalunya.

However, while accidents and injuries are part of racing, the main complaint from the riders is that as the MotoGP calendar expands there are ever more back-to-back events - as was the case with Catalunya, Assen and Donington Park - with no weekends off in-between to allow riders, and more specifically any injuries, to recover.

"This is racing and sometimes it happens," said Capirossi of his Barcelona accident. "The big sht for me is my injury - crashes like that happen, it's no problem - but the problem is that I'll carry the injuries for two more races because it's Barcelona then Assen then Donington in three weeks. This is the worst part."

But with Misano having signed an 'initial agreement' with MotoGP commercial rights holders Dorna for a new San Marino Grand Prix from 2007, the calendar could now expand to 18 races - unless one of the existing rounds is dropped and at present there is no obvious candidate for removal.

"18 races is too much," said Rossi, the reigning five times MotoGP World Champion. "At the beginning when we speak with Carmelo (Ezpeleta - Dorna) about the arrival of Misano, he said that one race is cancelled - so it will remain 17 - but at this moment the situation is not so definite. I hope it will remain 17, because already 17 is too much, especially as now we have a lot of testing on Mondays and sometimes Tuesdays after the races.

"For sure five races in six weeks is not good," added Valentino of the hectic race schedule currently underway. "It's better to have a short rest between the races and not to have races in a row - and this year we have lots of races in a row. But we speak for the future and for sure I hope it will remain 17 races."

I guess it has its good and bad....for fans, its great...more racing to watch, but for the teams and riders it gets harder and harder to be at their best each weekend.....
<

agree. even if I want to watch a race badly,I still want to ensure top fitness and performance from every rider. Safety first before anything else.

I'd rather watch the nineteen grid riders than watch Fabrizio versus Hoffmann on a duke and Silva etc etc.... and I'd rather watch a full fitness Melandri/Rossi/Capirossi battle than an injured one.

It's different in an F1 car than it is on a bike so I personall don't think that it's a good idea.

Orrmate, that isn't actually a bad idea. Practice in the morning, qualify in the afternoon, warmup the next morning, race the next day. Only problem is that it still requires them flying in on Thursday, competiting Saturday/Sunday, testing until Tuesday, then on Thursday flying back out to another location.

I think they should add obstacles on the race track, like in Gladiators or something.

Seriously 18 races is out of the question, what if someone carries an injury that gets damaged even more because of lack of rest. And has to get somethin amputated!

I'm not sure 18 is a good idea but I want to see Misano back on the calendar. And I really don't like the idea of two day weekends, those guys need all the set up time they can get. One hour practice session, one hour qualifying session, 20 minute warm up and race? Not enough time on track, IMO.

Agreed....do you know what tracks are up for renewal with Dorna for 07? They might drop one of them to compensate, that's what Rossi was saying the riders were originally told....Sepang?

Sepang or Qatar have been the most logical choices I've come up with. Sepang would be more probable to be cut, IMO. It's too bad because there is such a demand or eagerness for Misano but at the same time I think each track has its own unique features that make it a great venue.

Of the two, it would be best to cut Sepang.....only because the Mid-East connection is really important I think....that part of the world is constantly crapped on politically and socially....to have a MotoGP or any multinational sport come in helps unite that part of the world...even if only in a small way.....still a shame to lose any track....but as quantitiy goes up....usually quality does down....imo

make it 19 races so they can come to UK twice, Brands hatch baby, not enough run of time, will be crazzzzzzzzy lol

I'm not sure.. doesn't that kind of defeat the whole concept of Grand Prix racing?

Wasn`t Misano the track that sentinced Rainey to the wheelchair? I just hope it`s a lot safer than it was 15 years ago

It`d be nice to think that`s why Qatar stays on the calender, but I don`t think that`s the real reason. Qatar is in the middle east, but the average Qatari citizen has it a lot better than an Iraqi. It`s a rich little country. Crowds top at about 3000 on race day. That`s pretty damn pitiful. The reason Qatar stays on the calender, is despite the poverty and insecurity in the middle east, theyre are incredibly rich, fat oil sqillionares living there. These guys have so much money they don`t know what to do with it, so instead of investing in the local people, who are the ones who really need the money, they spend it on motorsport, and more often than not, .... it up. The A1 GP is a perfect example. That`s why Qatar was built. So they could watch the world championship come to their backyard, meanwhile up the gulf a few hundred miles and a few thousand territorial borders, starving kids are getting blown up by carbombs on their way to a 14 hour slave labour shift to pay for the hovel where their dying parents live. There`s better ways to spend money in the middle east than sink it in to motoGP races. And Qatar is so outta place anyway. The weather condiditons make it so different to any other GP round, and theres no crowds. I say axe it and tell the fat oil princes to fk off.

That`s a SBK format, it makes SBK individual. You gotta have some variety. Plus, six races a day is a bit over the top.

yeah right, mate.

IMO the more races the better, but not all bundled up in consecutive weekends, they should start the championship a month earlier because there is too much time between the end of the championship until the begining of the next one.
