Rizla Suzuki MotoGP is in the desert for this weekend’s race as the MotoGP spectacle heads to the heat of Qatar.

John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen will need to draw on their reserves of stamina and fitness in the hot surroundings of the Losail International Circuit as the high temperatures will take their toll on riders and bikes alike. The race has been moved from its usual October date to earlier in the year to take advantage of the cooler conditions, but with forecasts of 30 degrees or more it looks like being anything but cool.

The Losail circuit is situated in the rocky and flat desert terrain just outside Doha, the capital city of Qatar. The 5.380km circuit has a very interesting and demanding nature, but unlike most other tracks it has no chicanes and this has led to smooth and fast racing in recent years. The position of the circuit means that the surface can become very dusty and slippery as desert winds blow sand onto the track, this will make the choice of the correct tyres crucial. Suzuki and Bridgestone will be hoping that the added data from a test earlier in the year will prove vital as practice begins on Thursday morning.

The Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar is one of only two Saturday races on the MotoGP calendar. Due to this Rizla Suzuki MotoGP will be taking to the track on Thursday for the first two practice sessions. A further free practice hour will be held on Friday morning with the qualifying session in the afternoon. Saturday’s 22 lap race will get underway at 15.00hrs local time (14.00hrs CET).

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>Paul Denning – Team Manager:

“Qatar is a strange race all by itself on the MotoGP calendar - last year there were more bikes on the track than there were in the car park! We tested here earlier in the year and we will be hoping that the extra data we collected from that test will stand us in good stead for the race. Both the riders are full of confidence and determined to put on a good show at Qatar. John firmly believes that he should have had a better result at Jerez and is looking to move his season forward. Chris is really looking forward to the event as this is a track that he has raced on before and knows well from his WSB days, and he learnt a great deal in Jerez – especially at the test on Monday.

"We know we still have a lot of work to do and will be hoping that the performance of the GSV-R keeps improving, and that Bridgestone can continue their good form and bring us as good a tyre as we used at the Jerez test to cope with demanding conditions here in Qatar.”

That`s what I hate about preseason tests. Theyre just laptimes, but they always get my hopes up. Suzuki, Nakano, No hondas.... so much for all that

that's why u should'nt read to much into testing, practice or even qualifying. thier out ther just gettin things fine tuned as best they can. how many times have u seen the suzis & kwackers at the top of the time sheet's during practice & qualifying just to see em finish mid pack or worse? racing is different. when the lights go out, the cream rises to the top!

according to something I read somewhere [ can't remember just know ] there are more bikes in the paddock than in the car park,. Now that just ain't right is it ?

so I deduct from this state of affairs that this is just purely a corporate thing to cash in on some big cash to pay for the series....

I am eagerly waiting to be corrected

I couldn't be arsed going to the middle east, been before, it's too hot and too far away but they've built a bloody good track with state of the art facilities. They're paying the bills, even the eurosport guys were expressing their amazement at how much more had been built/improved since last year. From my sofa it will be a great race, the camera coverage is top notch at Losail.

Just to comment on the Suzuki PR page Hopkins has blown three engines today, two in the morning session and one at the start of his Q flyer. Unlucky.

COME ON HOPPER!! FANG THAT BRICK!

Chalk up another blown engine to Vermeulen in the Morning Warm Up and two mechanical DNFs for the race. The Suzuki boys have some work to do and as usual, by 'the Suzuki boys have some work to do' I don't mean the riders.

<span style="font-size:14pt;line-height:100%friggin' Suzuki ....

Chris is a bloody great rider but he's not getting the chance to show it anymore! Vermuelen would be doing so well if he was on a better bike, that piece of .... Suzuki will be the last of him if he stay with them.

Exactly the same goes for Hopkins ... I was rolling around on the ground laughing at him kick the .... out of that bike last night ... and good on him. He would've lost alot of money by doing that too, but im sure a heap of hopper and vermuelen fans would pay to kick that shitbox ... i would ...

frustration is.... going away slowly...

Paul Denning said that Hopper aint gonna face any form of punishment.

this is what he said (from crash.net):

"John's bike felt so much better than it had done all weekend. He made a good start and he was sure that he could catch the riders in front of him. Unfortunately, the performance of the bike tapered off to a point where it finally stopped," confirmed Denning. "John was obviously visibly upset and after the weekend that he has had I don't think it would be human not to let some of that frustration out - and nothing more will be said on the subject."

John has high hopes for things to improve at Suzuki this year. I really feel for him, anyone of us would have kicked the .... out of the bike too. I'd like to see how he'd do on something more competitive like....not a Suzuki. The Suzuki team don't look like they're getting anything right. Kenny wasted the past 4 years there IMO.

Meanwhile poor Hopper's in the Suzuki dungeon copping the cat o' nine tails

Friggin peice of crap. ......... at Suzuki tryin to build an air valve system out of used syringes and a clock radio. When you wanna build somthing like that, you can't do it on a budget... but in their defense at least their pineering the new technology instead of just talink about it.
Suzuki need to take a leaf outta Kawasaki's book. When you got a crap bike and a low budget, you don't try and make a shoestring 'revolutionary' bike. All that's gonna result in is yer top rider giving it a public booting and embarrasing you. You gotta take it slow, steadily build yer bike up. That's what Kawa did, they still haven't got the best bike, they had a bad weekend in Qatar and they average one podium per year, but at least they won't have to revert to last years bike, which even Yamaha have talked about doing. They're pacing themselves, for example instead of developing the revolutionary new techs themselves, they wait for Yamaha to try it, perfect it, then they steal it.

Well that's my two cents anyway

You should donate your two cents to the Suzuki effort Richo, they bloody need it. That bike is without doubt a big blue heap of crap. Put a friggin match to the whole sorry mess. The pneumatic valve thing is obviously not working. It can get them close to 20,000 rpm but .... did they not work out that the rest of the lump would most probably .... bolts in the process. Every friggin year now since the championship went 4 stroke they've been talkin a big talk, like how huge advances have been made in bike development but it never shows on raceday. At the same time talented riders who have been sold a lemon and signed on the dotted line are wasting their time and destroying their psycological mojo by bangin' their heads off the wall at every GP.

Hopper needs a competitive bike, peroid. Vermuelen is never gonna learn about racing with the guys at the front on a pile of ..... Kenny should have been on a Honda since 2002, that's the biggest tragedy of all. They'd be better to take a GSXR1000 down 10cc and tune the .... out of it.

should of signed with ducati when he had the chance. he's ...... now for 2 season!
