The world has always been going to hell in a handbasket, the youth of today is always more stupid, more immoral, more self-centered than they were in our youth. The same complaint has been made since the dawn of time, and yet we live longer, happier and healthier (with a few exceptions) lives than any of our ancestors.

It is naive to think that humans were ever not predominatly motived by self-interest, allthough self-interest in reality is something much more complicated and context dependend than some of the more popular conceptions of it.
