Stoner may undergo early surgery

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/70685

Ducati team boss Livio Suppo has suggested world champion Casey Stoner could miss the end of the season if his wrist injury continues to hinder him.
The Australian aggravated an old wrist injury - suffered in 2003 - during the San Marino Grand Prix weekend and has been in pain while riding since then.
Suppo said Stoner is likely to undergo surgery eventually, and the Italian claimed his rider was in a lot of pain during the Indianapolis Grand Prix last weekend.
With his championship chances now gone, Suppo has not ruled out the possibility of Stoner sitting out some of the remaining four races of the season in order to have surgery and be ready for winter testing.
"Casey keeps quiet because he doesn't want to be labeled a whiner, but I can reveal that, besides the problem with the hand, he had great pains in his shoulder and ribs from Friday's crash," Suppo was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport.
"We got checked by several doctors and the common prognosis is that it's the old fracture from 2003 opening up again. Surgery would require two and a half months of convalescence.
"If the pain remains tolerable, then Stoner will complete the season, otherwise..."
Stoner is 87 points behind championship leader Valentino Rossi, with just 100 available in the remaining races.

Depending on the results of the Motegi race it might be a good idea to sit out the rest to get a proper winter test done and be fully fit for next year. But that might also mean that he would have to concede 2 nd place in the standings to DP maybe?

What a whining little .... !!

.........

nah only kidding , I would definetly say give it a go at motegi.. if things dont feel good, then hang up those leathers for a while untill he's feeling ready to get some good test time in. A scaphoid injury is not one to be taken lightly especially in motorcycle racing.

Regarding the giving up second place to danni pedrosa... I wouldnt imagine casey would be too worried about that with his All or nothing attitude... and i definetly cant see casey carrying on the number 2 plate trend

Stoner being labeled a whiner - I think that ship has sailed. I can't see anybody who thinks that of him being converted by this statement. They would have been better to say nothing until the decision is made. This way it sounds like they are saying "We're not making excuses, BUT..."

People in the anti-Stoner camp will claim it's a case of "it's my ball and I'm going home, so it's coming with me" syndrome.

If he can see the season out then he should - can't see Ducati's sponsors being happy about him not racing; especially if it means missing out on PI. If Stoner sits it out then the only coverage they will get will be Marco running off track

Casey should sit it out, get fit, and prepare for a highly possible title challenge in 2009......

....then maybe Nicky could jump ship early!

Well it would make perfect sence but I think one could make the case for anything happens. Sure it is all but over. No one thought Casey would be crashing out like he has after he won 3 straight so you never know. I hope when the surgery is done though he heals 100%.

Good question, I wondered the same.

Have a go at Motegi, see what happens with the championship. I say don't hang it up until it's officially Rossi's. At that point, what does it matter? Get rested and ready to hop on the GP9. Besides, Gibs could get some time on the bike with other riders and not just a stop watch.

I think Stoner will want to beat Rossi every single race until he retires including the remaining ones this year. Can you imagine the innane BS Rossi fans would be flailing around if he left early injury or not?

I imagine it wouldn't be much different than it is now. It might even be better. Rather than manipulating Stoner's words and actions so that us fans with no real preference for either Stoner or Rossi have to actually wonder if their arguments have any value whatsoever, they will be forced to invent outrageous things to rip Stoner apart for. Likely so outrageous that we wouldn't even bother. Saving us valuable time and energy when navigating the forum.

He should have the surgery, the championship was gone before it and after it.

I wish him all the best.

Austin 100% correct! Stoner should do Motegi, if Rossi clinches then get the bone work and Gibby will slot in nicely, Stoner's got nothing to prove at that point.

Bang on the money,Austin.

I say see how it goes at Motegi while you're still in with a mathematical chance of the title, but if Rossi secures it there then get the surgery done ASAP so you've got more recovery time for testing and next season.
