So Stoner is the New Doohan ..... however

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (BarryMachine @ Mar 13 2008, 02:13 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>I think runoffs and tracks in general look a lot better/safer these days so lets hope those sort of things never happen again .... like Kato ...... never should have happened. Isn't that why they dropped Suzuka?... too dangerous ?
Yes, and they also improved the riders safety gear after the rainey crash with the spine support device.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Tom @ Mar 12 2008, 02:28 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Yes doohan got injured, but he was the one taking the risks and getting it wrong. The fact that he achieved the success justifies his actions, but the fact that he made it difficult does not increase the its worth.

I understand entirely what you are saying but it is just my way, I do place a higher credence because of the hazards and situations that he suffered which really, we have not seen a repeat of (thankfully).

For mine it would be similar with Alex Zanardi were he to make a comeback and win championships after his accident.

Yes, they take the risks and often they overstep but when they comeback from such injury it really does show their individual character and IMO can increase the worth of the championship.

Does make for an interesting discussion though.

As much I dislike Criville, he won a championship. I don't recall Lorenzo winning a race in MotoGP, and I don't recall Pedrosa winning a championship in MotoGP either. Yeah, all three are similar, in that they are all pompous arrogant .... birds, but that's it. As far as titles go, only one of this Spaniard ....-trio has actually won a championship. So why even compare them?

Don't you think you are getting way too ....... ahead of yourself? Please man, when you do this, what little objectivity you may enjoy goes totally out the window buddy.

The rest is meaningless to discuss. END OF THREAD HERE.great post rj.

A telling reminder of that period is that Doohan, Schwantz and Rainey all retired with varying levels of disability, not forgetting Daryl Beattie losing all the toes on one foot. Better or worse, probably some of the hardest .......s on bikes out the came from that era.

Also not forgetting the likes of Kevin Magee, Bubba Shobert (spelling on that one)and others of the same era.

Nowadays due to track safety improvements as well as technological advancements in the riders equipment (bike and gear), the results of an off are often not as catastrophic thankfully.

well at last the real answers start coming LOL

I must admit I feel the same but that sort of detracts from the Doohan era too doesn't it?
