Which of Rossi's race victories do you think has been the greatest?

There are definately plenty to chose from so there is much to discuss, and feel free to throw in races from his smaller class career or suzuka 8 hours.

My votes go for..............

Philip Island 2003, How many other riders could do that?

South Africa 2004, What a ride and i think the best race of Biaggi's career.

Sepang 2006, He shouldn't have won that, the others were nowhere and the ducati had everything going for it. That was Rossi doing his thing.

Discuss.........

2003 pi was pretty spectacular. i thought the victory at donnington in the rain in 05 was insane! he almost went over the bars half a dozen times & still pulled it out!

Donington in the rain in 05 WAS insane

Now that's a tough one, Tom. There's only a lazy 50+ to choose from!!!

South Africa in 2004 rates highly, for the obvious reasons. Brno in 2003 was pretty special one for him too.

He's had so many great wins, snatched on the last lap, or planned to perfection so that he smokes those chasing with 3-4 laps to go, it's kinda hard to separate them.

South Africa in '04.
So far in his career he quoted it as his best race and I still think it is.
With adjustments off the scale, short preseason testing, underpowered engine no one thought he was going to pull that away.

For me personally it was Donington 2005, because I was there. And it was the first time a rider made me, and most people around me, simply stare in amazement. In one lap he had pulled out a gap that was just rediculous, and we thought Barros and Roberts had crashed, but when they came around we were just stunned. We couldn't understand how he'd done it. And that is a memory I will take to my grave with me.

I'd say in actual fact his best win was Phillip Island 2003. No such performance has been seen before or since as far as I'm concerned. That is the performance that, for me, defines Rossi as the greatest of all time.

Welkom 2004 was special for a different reason, because I don't think there has ever been a race run at such astonishing pace. The lap times they were setting, if I remember rightly, would have got them on the front row. One of Rossi's greatest, and certainly Biaggi's greatest.

These seem to be the three anyway.

Rossi Assen 97 125cc bad start got to the front messed with the bike handle bars ? fell back to around tenth can through to lead and win or germany 2006 on a crap bike

i'm sorry for being boring but i'll have to go .for Welkom too.

mainly because Rossi did what nobody though was possible - winning on the M1

Philip Island 2003 beating the 10 second penalty or the miracles he made in a rain-soaked Donnington.

PI 2003 was great, but Sachsenring 2006 was an utter street fight.

is that the one where he got a 10 sec penelty and still won by 13 secs. thats the one that has my vote.

yep... that's the 1.

It is pretty difficult to choose, maybe:

Phillip Island 03 - 10 second penalty so went and won by about 15 seconds.

Welkom 04 - won first race on rubbish yamaha.

Phillip Island 04 - clinching 04 world title for Yamaha.

Sachsenring 06 - beating 3 hondas on a worse bike was impressive.

BUT THE BEST:

Donnington 05
That race in the wet when most others fell he somehow suddenley went about 3-4 seconds a lap quicker than everyone else who was left in the race.

germany 2006 is gettting a few mentions on here, which surprises me because it was a pretty standard win by his standards. I mean with so many fast guys so close it was an excellent battle and a thrilling race, but rossi was just another guy battling for that win (except of course that he pulled it off)

PI, he set fastest lap after fastest lap and it took him awhile to figure out what the hell had happened. Best a 990cc honda has ever been ridden IMO.

Things like Donington 05 & PI 03 are sublime, but winning a close battle is much much sweeter.

I'd say the one where he bashed Sete off at the last corner was one of the most exciting i've seen Rossi compete in, apart from that all his races are good.

Ahh, see i think a close batlle is great to watch, but when there was 5 people riding around so close to him it makes him marginaly better than them on that day. a 10 second PI win is worth way more than a 6 way scrap in germany in my book.

he wrist injury was 3 weekes previous and i am not sure it was a major factor is his performance, i mean i only slightly affected him at donington. And tenth on the grid yes, but he was 6th at the end of the first lap, in a 6 man dice for the lead. So he didn't play any major catch up or have to bridge any gaps, ligtning start though. I think this was an excellent win without a doubt, but not ranking that highly compared to some of the miracles hes pulled.
