I'm gonna stab in the dark here and then look it up after. My guess is either the win was special for being on a BMW, or it was Reg Pridmore, or at a real long shot, both.
I was MILES off, but the correct answer is much better. I wont spoil it. Reg Pridmore was the first AMA champ on a BMW but Datona is clearly a different story

Times up! It was Jaarno Sarineen and what made the win special was the fact he beat the big bikes on a TZ350 (which I have had the great honour of seeing and hearing run at Mallory Park).

Anyone know if there is still a bmx track in the infield at laguna? I guess we know who it got there.
