Question - who's buying serious sport bikes

Actually the 'busa makes a good tourer on NA roads.

I guess our definition of 'tourer' needs some refinement.

How many miles between fills does that ridiculous thing get? 160?

I don't tour to spend all my time looking for gas stations.

I bought a new gsxr 1000 Dec 2009 and a new zx14r in March this year. My wife forced me to buy the quacka because she liked the colour!! It replaced a 2006 zx14 which proved to be a great pillion bike. I bought them both for effortless performance. I like the fact that I need few gearchanges once on the go.

I do theoccasional track day ,so something with a bit of go was required. As I get older comfort has almost become a reason not to buy these bikes ,but adding risers to both bikes hasmade them quite comfortable. The gsxr has convertibars currently about4-5" higher than stock, so I feel that I have created a cheaper Tuono with fairing!

My purchasing decision...........s have been made by assessment of various bike reviews as well as personal knowledge and not advertising or motogp success. I don,t smoke or drink energy drinks.

POv, glad to know that you are also a fan of big quakkas. There is hope for you yet!haha,

ps, busas and zx14 make excellent touring bikes!

pps, Barry, I am going to pay you a visit and see if I can take on that formidable Hyosung! Which one should I bring? ......and where do you live?

I was quite specific about the distance ...... has to be 580km. And I'm allowed to run my bike as is.

I live at Norah Head but we can start from the Shell servo at Ourimbah ........ It works best with Shell V-Power.

Race to the Shell at Grafton ...... and back if you like. Tickets and time are not deducted ( ie. the time adds to your time ), your choice if you want to. No team waiting to refuel ....

Actually we might make that Coffs ......the old girl has over 80,000k's on the clock now so it uses a tad more fuel than it did at 30,000. Might only get 3.0L/100 now!!

Just out of interest how many km's per tank do you get with the ZX14 and the GSXR?

PS. No team waiting to refuel also means no fueling on the go!!

Currently run a 2008 CBR600RR, bought new in 2009. Have run Baba era blades in the past. No special love for Honda, just that the reports always seem to say that the Honda is the easiest to get on with, and up until recently I have made do with the one bike.

I have never had a major issue with comfort on any sportsbike, I suspect being a bit taller than average takes away the stretch to the bars / weight on wrist issues I read so many journos going on about.

I love having the bike, have done a couple of trackdays, and a trip to the Nurburgring.

Personally, I do not have a problem with being offered far more performance than I could ever use (in fact I am juvenile enough to enjoy the option), although I had to laugh at one salesman a few years back when he said that as I was a biggish bloke the blade would be a sensible choice.

I am not sure what I will replace the CBR with, but I doubt if it will be new.

I see the current issue with the slowing rate of change (at least from the Japanese factories), but the biggest difficulty for me is price. Current list for a CBR600RR is over 50% more than what I paid three and a half years ago. That's a bloody hard rate of inflation to match at the best of times, never mind what we have at the moment.

Barry, both bikes will do 330kms comfortably and 380km if I try.

How about 2 laps of the Wollombi, Broke, Putty Rd, Windsor, Ourimbah loop instead. I want a plod-free ride!

Which day are you free next week?

I just cant pull the trigger on a !4R. Couple of my friends have them and they are wonderful bikes, but , i am more crunched in on a 14, than i am on my 12R. Im not getting any younger, which means my knees are not getting any more flexible. My next one may just be a 14 Connie. Even on my 12, im looking forward to a fuel stop so i can stretch my knee that i had replaced. For those wondering about fuel, if im running 70-75 mph on the slab, which is like never, i can stretch a tank of fuel 150-160 miles. Running 85-100 mph, which is the norm, 135-140 miles. When im playing in the mountains, i can make the low fuel flasher come on in 80 miles. You got to pay to play. My friends on 1000's can go 170 miles, and the ones with 1000 twins can only go 110-120. That does not make for a tourer by definition, but a lot more fun.

ive owned most all of Honda and Yamaha superbikes from mid-90s up to 2009.

(i still want the latest R1 that engine sounds ....)

a few Honda and Yam 600s, a couple Suzy 600 and 750s..a Kaw 600, think it was an 02? Ive had a .... ton of bikes but Im not a fat .... like Pov so i never bought Busas and Kaw 1400s
<

imo Honda makes the best ...., Yamaha is my favorite if i go by numbers, but ive loved them all...... sept for that Hyo that was given to me, we took that one out to the shooting range

as far as when i'm buying another one..hmmm.. Spies pissed me off, i aint buying a BMW. So i guess ill save up for the 2015 R1

That run might play into my hands even better, the half way house is dubious for fuel isn't it? I can make it through the Putty no worries, I can actually make that whole loop.

Tickets would definitely be included in that run though,

Are you near there/here Buny? Those are all local roads to me, I actually commute the Wollombi run some days ( long route I know but I have a property on the main road up that way. planning on building and moving there in the next few years )

Not free any weekdays till Xmas though at this stage ..... and I have trouble getting a ride on weekends atm sadly. My commute has turned into my fun atm, sadly.

Ah, come on Barry, you,re not avoiding me are you? Ok maybe a weekend run. I think I can do the Putty loop without a refill, but will then have to stay below 140. I live near Castle Hill, about an hour away from you. Norah Head is a nice spot. I have done some fantastic snorkelling off Pelican Point.

Pov, I,m surprised that a 14 is more cramped than a 12, but then I have ridden a 12r once only and many years ago. I think the 12r has a high seat , so the greater legroom makes sense. The 12r is a great bike, but not so good for pillions, whereas the 14 makes a great pillion bike. I just wish the manufacturers would give us the option of a sporty bike with comfortable ergonomics. The kawasaki 1000sx is a good start in that direction, but still fairly poor in the pillion area. Mostly the japs dumb down the bike when in "standard" form, ie frame, brakes and suspension are lower spec. It is possible to create the right bike as I have, but it would save a lot of trouble if they did it for us. A concours is just way too big from my perspective at 6ft and 83kg (185lb?) The Aprilia Tuono is one of the few bikes with comfortable ride position and quality components , but only for one. The choice in bikes now is enormous , so it seems odd that I still struggle to find what I want in standard form. Too fussy?? I would have bought The Kwaka 1000sx if it were better in the pillion area. My wife gave it the thumbs down. Seat too small and many vibrations (not of the good kind). Thus I was forced to buy a green 14r .......................

The 14 you set more in the bike, where the 12 is more like a true sport bike that you set perched on, instead of in. Off topic, this weekend we were having some seriously spirited riding and i notice i was really having to fight the bike in corners, so much my wrist were hurting. Got to our destination, about 3 hours from home and found out the problem, I knew i was getting close to needing a new set of tires, but not that close. The rear had a 10 inch section on the left side contact patch that was down to the threads, and im 200 miles from home on ultra curvy roads. needless to say, the trip home was much slower, with little to no lean angles involved. You know what its like, but for those who have never ridden the big block sport bikes, the torque just grinds the tires off the damn thing. 2000 miles is it, and thats if i take a trip and hit the slabs or ride around town a lot. In the mountains, you can trash a set in a weekend.

I filled up at my local Repsol today.

I thought about continuing my boycott, but thought of all you PSers and gave them another shot!
