Qatar Test

So what are people's thoughts on Redding? He has been there or thereabouts in every test (top 6) and seems very confident on the GP15. He hasn't made headlines like Vinales has, but he has been quick. I hope he does well, but will be curious to see if his testing pace drops away in the actual season, which we know is common.

Krops, I was away over the weekend and am only just catching up today, but just wanted to say thanks for the testing article you posted with information on race simulations, projected time etc, a thoroughly interesting read and just the sort of nitty gritty I love.

This to me is very disconcerting...

The factory Yamaha men are helped by the fact that they have a small army of electronics engineers helping to optimize the Magneti Marelli common software. The Tech 3 team have just a single electronics guy between the two riders, and their lack of resources is reflected by their place on the timesheet: Pol Espargaro is in tenth, Bradley Smith is in twelfth.

It's the way of the world now in motorsports, but if ever there was a strong case for a total ban on electronics, this would be the easiest way to justify it.

All the influx of electronics did was allow works teams to put a massive gap between them and everyone else.

Yes "control" electronics rather than bespoke ones, so throw more computer techs at them, who were already the biggest expense with the bespoke electronics.

It may be advantage Yamaha over Honda at this stage, they have often worked smarter than Honda, and Ducati might be relatively advantaged as well particularly since they had the opportunity to try more things last year, so if there is at least more parity between manufacturers if not between factory and satellite bikes that might something of a plus.

(EDIT Both Yamaha and Ducati are previous Magnetti Marelli users anyway, which I had forgotten, so further advantage Yamaha. I might have to go for MM after all.)

By the end of this season we'll probably starting seeing a gap open once Yamaha and Honda have enough data to understand how to start maximizing use of the ECU. Having an army of computer techs to handle this means it is only a matter of time before they come to grips with this fully.

Honda's biggest issue IMO is not that they haven't gotten to grips with the ECU, but that the RCV is physically demanding, and it doesn't bode well for Dani Pedrosa. Marc Marquez will be fine, and if anything the physicality should make him a better overall rider since he'll be able to learn a lot of finesse and touch. Dani on the other hand given his endless ailments and early unhappiness with the RCV is going to make for a tough 2016 campaign on that side of the garage. We still have time for them to get the bike in better shape for the grand prix, but I'd be wary if it's a one-off fix based on the enormous amount of testing data from Losail, and doesn't carry into round 2 at Argentina.

Mike makes a great point about involving more resources to a 'dumber' ECU. Honda's problem is that even last year with the NASA electronics they had difficulty taming the RCV, now they may double the tech but the ECU is still the 'dumber' one. This doesn't bode well for their season.

One thing I have learned about Honda is they trade horses the best of all the manufacturers. Tire? Marquez: undecided. Rosie: undecided. Ever seen the TV show, let's make a deal?

Me personally, I'd rather see traction control, launch control, wheelie control, all eliminated.

Engine braking and power delivery should be severely curtailed. Let it be determined by how the engine is designed and built rather than throwing together an engine that might be ghastly, but becomes immensely rideable due to smart programming. There should be more focus on the engineering of the engine rather than having the bailout option of electronics.

Watching Wayne Rainey go wide open throttle popping a wheelie out of a corner without letting off on 500cc's, was disgusting to watch. It showed if you were willing to let it all out, you could out-accelerate anyone. 250HP on a modern GP machine sounds great, but what does it really mean?
 
What does it mean, 5 second faster lap times, 25 mph faster trap speeds, better racing,all while being safer. Technology bro, come to grips with it, in my experience, you can't put the Genie back in the bottle and expect the masses to accept it.

You think the masses really know or give a ....? Come on dude, the only people who give a .... about the electronics are the teams and the riders.

You can't see a lap time simply by watching.

Just say they brought 2-strokes back tomorrow and banned all electronics, most fans would not care. Sure you'd have people bitching, but the 2-stroke era overall has been far superior to the 4-stroke era. If there is competitiveness up and down the grid, that will trump any loss of technology.

Also, Nakamoto already said the unified ECU is where Honda was at 10 years ago...this is not some great leap forward in technology. They've gone backwards.

Not sure if it was before you arrived, but I went out of my way a while back to show that without a doubt, racing was much much closer in the 4 stroke era compared to the 2 stroke era. It wasn't even close. Can you see the difference in 5 seconds a lap and 25 mph speeds? I can

When you say closer, do you mean in terms of gaps between riders, overtakes, something else?
 
Known some Duc fanatics but they all seemed like rich posers. I'm sure that isn't true of all Duc lovers. Never even seen a Sumo on the street.


A few years ago there were zillions of guys on Maddasses in Thailand- Now everyone is riding Honda MSX125s here. Some models have a feau trellis set up and Thais cover the Honda stickers with Duc ones and they look like little midget Dukes. Pretty sweet.

Yeah mine is gone. Got it really suped up but no way to run it w exposed air filter on rainy days. Loved it tho. Got me a DRZ400sm. Fun and bulletproof.
