Potential huge news for Yamaha

With Rossi's star power waning significantly it opens up the rest of MotoGP/MotoGP Teams for sponsorship.  I have long argued that because MotoGP was really just Moto46 it was pointless for any corporation to spend sponsorship dollars on anything but Rossi.  Especially new sponsors.  Hopefully MotoGP won't make the same mistake again and turn MotoGP into Moto93.  The sport needs to be about all the personalities not just one and not just one nationality.

I agree 100%. I have always said that Dorna manipulated the game and promoted Rossi   to the long term detriment of the sport. Hopefully they have seen the affects, and will try and avoid another scenario where one rider hogs all of the media and the money. I dont think it will happen to that extent because Marquez has competitors who are as good as he is . He has the smile, he is well spoke, he rides the .... out of a bike, but he will never have the influence that Rossi had. When there is only one guy who everyone knows will win the title, the bandwagon fan is going to automatically turn into a sheep and cheer on the victor. Now, there are 3 riders capable of winning the title and the sheep have choices. That leaves Dorna with numerous fan bases to appease ,hopefully, they are smart enough to take advantage of the opportunity before them.

This is great news (if it happens). Yamaha perpetually seem to struggle for sponsorship. Having Telefonica/Movistar as a long-term sponsor would put them on more equal footing with HRC, which can only be good for the sport. It'll also, no doubt, create a "special edition" R1 in Telefonica livery which may help boost Yam's road bike sales. Shoot, I already want one.

SwissGas is not a 'title sponsor'... They are just 'extending' their current deal for more visibility. Telefonica still may be at 'title sponsor' candidate.

Where would it fit, with all them other sponsors?

Fiat was just announced as the title sponsor and 'logistics partner'.

Somehow this doesn't sound like the huge news that a Telefonica deal would've been. It seems that instead of cash there would be cars: "Fiat Professional will also provide commercial vehicles to assist Yamaha’s logistical operations. These will include the Ducato Van and the Fiat Scudo Panorama models." Plus, it is yet another Rossi-linked sponsor that would evaporate if the old man decides to leave at the end of this (or next) season, like in 2010.

but at least they got some sort of a title sponsor.

I agree, a Telefonica deal would be a lot more significant, since that would have given Yamaha a long-term sponsor with deep pockets. As Mick D points out, though, it can still happen. My fingers are crossed.

Yamaha boss Lin Jarvis on Yamaha and Telefonica title sponsor rumour: "I

think rumours of Telefonica coming back have been around pretty much

every year since they left. At the moment I am aware of the rumour and

at Yamaha we haven't met the Telefonica people. So at this moment i

think it remains a rumour, but if Telefonica were to come back then it

would be very nice if they did so with us."

Apparently they wanted Monsters space on the bike which was the cause for the delayed announcement.

I wonder what we will end up with.
