What's he doing back? I thought Charpentier had retired.

Keep an eye on the European Superstock Champion Gino Rea (no relation) this year. The boy's got it.

Whatever he has got,he needs to get more of it because he is close to 3 seconds off the pace

While in SBK, Roger Lee, another proven talent - with far more experience, is over five seconds amiss. This was a bad move for him, and he deserves more. He'll likely struggle all year

All I said was keep an eye on him. He's sure to show some potential this year. Jason Di Salvo's no slouch and is also languishing down there on the timesheet; and Robin Harms, who is a regular front runner in this class, and also has GP experience was slower. The kid's never raced outside of Europe, and PI is a real riders circuit and a hard track to learn. Saying that, I'm not sure that Roger Lee's been here either other than as a spectator.

Yamaha look to be in a bit of trouble. I wonder if it's just PI or if Honda and Ducati have actually done a bit of work to close the gap.

Sykes is looking really good. I'm happy to see that he is replicating his form from his BSB days. He's first Kawasaki, and he's in a relatively competitive position, imo.

I wonder if Hayden is starting to question his decision. He's riding a satellite bike for the worst manufacturer at circuits he doesn't know. Plus, he's never been great on an SBK anyway. I know the AMA isn't a great prospect for anyone right now, let alone a rider of Hayden's caliber, but he has made a precarious career decision by joining Pedercini.

I think Rogers problem is he has to race somewhere because he has never had the huge contract to set him up. Its either race or put on the tennis shoes and start selling used cars. Nick on the other hand should be set for life.

There is always the possibility that spies was good rather than the 2009 yamaha, and that sykes' showing on it was more reflective of real world performance.

I said all along the Ducati was the best machine and Spies was the best rider, by a mile.

Its weird looking at the WSS list and seeing no Yamaha or Suzuki. Suzuki hasnt been a player for a while but Yamaha certainly has,

For sure, but Toseland and Crutchlow were fast right out of the gate at the Portimao test. I know Ben is incredibly talented, but I think his masterful abilities are more about managing races and saving a little bit extra in reserve. For Spies to use that kind of racecraft, he needs a world class motorcycle (like his old Yosh Suzuki).

I don't think Spies has ever made a bad bike good, he's only unlocked the full potential of any race machine. He didn't set the world on fire with the GSRV.

Maybe I'm wrong, but Sykes never looked comfortable on the R1. He looks more comfortable on the Kawasaki.

So basically your saying that the new 2010 model needs work. I was trying to rack my brain and think if Sykes ever complained about chatter. I don't think that he ever felt comfortable on the bike but I don't know if he ever went into detail on why. The Portimao test does throw a little kink in the plot though cause Toseland and Crutchlow were pretty fast there although conditions were much different. I think the difference is still Spies. I think that he was able to modify his riding style to suit the bike much like he is doing for the M1. Of course there is always the probability that they are sandbagging like Haga.

I hope that RLH can find something. He is looking pretty bad right now.

What are the odds that Ducati go 1,2,3 in both races? Pretty good I'm guessing.

Guy Martin has expressed exactly the same theory in this months 'Performance Bike' magazine in his assessment of this years field. "I don't think the Yamaha is as fast as Ben Spies made it look last year - I think Spies is exceptionally good"

Probably. Spies certainly got 10/10ths out of the 2009 bike and I would say that Crutchlow and Toseland got at least 9/10ths on their first ride. Since then they've gone backwards. Either the Yamaha is getting slower, or the other bikes are getting much faster.

It makes sense now that the 2010 bike is backmarking, but it doesn't make sense in light of Crutchlow's and Toseland's performance at Portimao on the 2009.

Imo, Ben had a very good bike that Sykes couldn't seem to ride. The 2010 R1 is having a few teething issues.
