penalty point system is garbage

you can't tell me I'm not the only one who thinks the penalty point system is both unnecessary and under punishing. I hate how formula one has a huge festival for every time contact is made, but incidents should be measured by severity, not points. if the boys in race direction cant figure out how to reasonably decide if incidents a rider is involved over the season add up to a penalty or not and they need a points system to keep track of it, then motogp really is in trouble. also I like Marc Marquez but how the incidents he's caused over the season haven't added up to even four points is beyond me. Marc is an amazing rider and if you put him in the back from four incidents hell finish at least fifth. basically the one race ban is nearly impossible to reach because achieving ten points over a season is incredibly insane. I just don't see how almost killing marshalls is on the same level as accidentally cutting someone's traction control. and crashing into another rider should be at least two points, yet I think bautista has less penalty points than Marc Marquez... I mean seriously no one will ever hit ten points and to take four incidents to get any sort of penalty is pathetic and I doubt any of the riders could be worried about it until they're at three. either give more points for more serious, wteckless incidents, or really scale down this horrendous scale that's been implemented. and if none of that is a achievable task, .... penalties

What is the other option?

F1 penalizes the drivers because the sponsors and teams flip out when their $10M rolling billboards smash into carbon dust. That's what happens when the cars and the stickers cost more than the driver's annual salary.

MotoGP bikes are basically 250hp battering rams, and two guys have died since switching to 4-strokes. They gotta keep the insurance people happy, and they've got to keep all 4 competitive bikes on the track for the TV people. The previous formulas had more factories, and the bikes were cheaper and slower.

Penalties systems are caused by changes in other areas, imo.

The way the points system should be if a rider has more then one incident then more points should be taken out. 1st offense if not something outright stupid or harsh he did maybe 2 points. 2nd offense bump it up 4 or 5 points. 3rd offense 12 points and start from the pits or last. 4 offense take all points away for that race and ban one race it will show the riders not to be to aggressive

Race direction has just had a major shake-up, IIRC. The old guard is out, the new guard is in and have instituted this system to show they mean business.

Although it does seem to be ineffective - especially when they give a single-point penalty to someone. If he committed a foul worthy of a penalty, surely something like a ten-place grid demotion would be a lot more effective than a point off a table-leading points tally?

....a way to be seen to be doing something, without doing anything.

They went stupidly heavy handed in the Tamada/Hopkins era...and now we have this. Penalty points. If they had balls they'd justify their positions on incidents, impose a penalty and move on. This way they don't mess with the brains of the casual fan. Good for the "show".

Marquez should have been given penalty points for that contact with Lorenzo at Jerez. He used his bike as a battering ram to get past Lorenzo, 100% intentionally. Then he would be at 4 points and be starting from the back of the grid.

A think the penalty point system is a good idea but i think the way its been implemented is crap. Race direction are not know for their consistency in applying rules. Thank god we didn't have it under Butler.

Is there an appeal process if given points ?

So far i think the yellow flag indecent deserved the 2 points and maybe should have been 3. The mm/dp 1 point was wrong and will set an unwelcome president. The 25 points to HRC is ridiculous. I doubt any of these points will have any real effect on mm or hrc and the cynic in me can't help but feel this was a consideration when the level of penalty points was set.

penalty system another rule n regs bollocks . racing is rubbing any probs let independant Race Direction sort it that afternoon / onward to next round.

fook tv cameras track cctv pics / wires carbon fibre design flaw for .... sake.

I'd be all for this except for I don't want to see riders murdering one another on the track...

I think they just need a simpler system that is still easy for the average fans to understand. The problem with the current system is nobody (especially the riders) know what penalty they will recieve for what behaviour (ie. will this risky move cost me 1, 2 3, 4 points?), so it is totally ineffective.

Yellow card: Official warning for a dangerous/negligent incident (ie. missing flags, contacting another rider with intent, causing an easily avoidable accident, etc). There is no penalty for a yellow card. Two yellow cards result in a red card.
Red card: You must still qualify for the race (practice & qualy), but you start from the back of the grid. A red card can be applied without acruing two yellow cards if the incident is deemed serious enough (something like the Willaroit incident for example).

Any further incidents in a season will result in a one race ban.

You start each new season with a clean record. These rules should be applied throughout all classes.

That way, the rider knows that if I do '...... A', I will get a yellow. If I get a second yellow, I will be starting from the back of the grid. As an example of it applied to this season, I would have handed out two yellows to Marquez (Jerez contact + missing the yellow flags).
