MotoGP tyre rules tweaked

Here's the juicy read:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>There have also been complaints about the lack of dual compound tires, with softer compounds on the sides of tires and a harder compound in the middle, though these tires are scheduled to make an appearance later this summer.

I think I said that Stoner's tires would make a random reappearance halfway through 2008. I can't claim that Krpotkin's article and my prediction are more than coincidence, but changes to the tires during the summer appears to be a plausible modus operandi for Dorna.

I really don't think a tire change this major (from allegedly full-on prototype tires to control carcass with one-make prototype rubber w/o dual compounding) is possible without testing along the way. Considering how specialized GP tires are, testing would need to be conducted at every circuit on the calendar. Should we review what happened to Michelin when Dorna banned overnight fly-ins? That rule only changed the way tires are delivered!

I think this article also dispels any notion that Bridgestone would simply make 1 prototype tire for everyone. The control tire displays only a fraction of the technical intricacies found in prototype tires from previous seasons. This B-stone control tire must be very similar to the tire run during last season because it is the only way Bridgestone could successfully supply a relatively unsophisticated control tire without testing and without losing performance.
