just read some very intriguing tweets from David Emmett, editor of motomatters.com :

"It appears that there has been a crackdown on Social Media use by some MotoGP-related manufacturers. Would be a very, very bad move.

After all, we wouldn't want to be engaging audiences and building enthusiasm for the brand, now, would we?

It would be a delicious irony if Dorna turned out to be the racing organization with the most enlightened social media policy."

later replies alleviated to it not being down to Dorna.  my main reason for being on twitter is so that I can get an understanding of what is going on behind the scenes.  I eagerly await the article Mr Emmett says he is going to write on this matter.  has somebody in the know been leaking info that would preferably not be in the public domain?

will update

so the teams are telling riders / mechanics not to tweet ??

another nail in the coffin of motogpiss

Im hoping twitter will go away. This is a great step.

I dont even understand what people are trying to say, it all looks like computer code.

Then don't use it, but for some of us twitter is a great source for information.

I think I might have confused this situation, not being in fully aware of the facts, it appears twitter is not to blame.  And it is Dorna that are the centre of the storm for their aggressive stance on copyright, searching youtube and having videos removed that fans have placed there.

Why this has been brought to our attention, the two sources have imposed their own seemingly harsh restrictions on what members of their team can reveal through social media, even speculation. What the teams themselves video in the paddock, be it something happening in their team or something unrelated which they wish to become public knowledge, is also being tightly restricted by Dorna.  This also has a detrimental effect on sponsorship, limit what is allowed to be shown will also crush their exposure. Limiting what can or cannot be shown will have a negative affect, why would you sponsor a team if they are not front runners and getting little or no exposure.

What our sport is lacking at the moment is money, the more promotion through social media and us fans spreading the word makes it a more appealing prospect.  Ever wondered why those coveted team shirts are so expensive, you are a walking advertisement and the money has to be recouped from somewhere.

Now that Dorna are in control of WSBK, they too have been restricted to what has been placed on their youtube channel compared with previous years.  Personally, I think Dorna have shot themselves in the foot

While I very rarely follow Twitter (I'm in JK's camp on this one), I find it unsurprising that the likes of a GP team want to control what goes out into the public domain. Do you want your team's message to come from a mechanic or from the PR guy you pay to fly around with you and type non-committal fluff?

[I'm not saying I agree with the stance, and I'd prefer candid messages to corporate spin, but this is pretty much SOP for companies big enough to have their own flacks]

it took me a while to get into twitter, but now I think it can be a very useful tool.  I think it was because MotoGP was being delayed for

some reason and I was curious as to exactly why.  MotoGP are very good at keeping the fans right up to date, they were even tweeting during

testing, which is updated almost instantly, much sooner than motogp.com or their facebook page.

The riders/crew/teams/series I have connected with is around 80% of my total follows.  Getting information straight from the rider might have taken hours if not days or not even made public knowledge. I think it makes me closer to the sport I love

I follow several of riders on twitter, it's odd but there's not been one rider (who I follow anyway) that's tweeted anything in the last 18 hours. That's very unusual as far as I'm concerned.

Of course they could be looking at twitter as an issue after some of the other sportsmen have fallen foul of it. Only last year Lewis Hamilton put up some information and showed some graphs which the team were furious about didn't he? Maybe they're concerned about the same kind of thing happening from an ill advised tweet. After all once it's been tweeted and seen by millions, some of whom would retweet etc. you can't do much about it can you?

Skaface, one minor point, i think there is still plenty of revenue in GP, i just dont think the leadership have managed it by design for ALL their entries. Top heavy exposure, i agree.
