BRUCE BUFFER: Ladies and gentlemen, this... is... the main event of the season. Sanctioned by Dorna and the FIM after a firm talking to of the riders by the Permanent Bureau with FIM President Vito Ippolito and Chief Executive Officer of Dorna Sports Carmelo Ezpeleta. Our judges scoring this contest are: the journalists, press and media staff writing and recording every aspect of this contest. When the action begins our referee in charge will be Herb Dean. This battle is sponsored by Dos Equis. You may not always drink beer, but when you do, spit it out while screaming at the television because... Moto GP.
And now, (almost) LIVE, from the sold out Circuito de la Comunitat Valenciana in Ceste, Spain. This, is the moment, you have all been waiting for.
IIiiiiiiiiit's, TIME! 30 laps, for the (undoubtedly to be) disputed 2015 MotoGP Championship of the world!
BRUCE BUFFER: Introducing first, racing out of the blue corner. This man is a mixed MotoGP racing artist with a recent record here at Valencia of 2nd place in 2014, 4th in 2013 and 10th in 2012. He stands 182 cm tall and weighs 65kg after a hefty meal of his mothers spicy meatballs and lasagna. Racing out of Urbino, Italy, the challenger, Il Doctore, Valentino Rossi!
BRUCE BUFFER: And now introducing his opponent, awkwardly also racing out of the blue corner. This man is a Yamaha-do MotoGP racing artist with a recent Valencia record of a DNF in 2014, 1st place in 2013 and a DNF in 2012. He stands 173 cm tall and weighs in at 64kg after a full mean of paella and tres leches. Racing out of Palma de Mallorca Spain, your hometown hero, Jorge Loreno!
MIKE GOLDBERG: This tale of the tape is brought to you by Dave and Busters. Dave and Busters, eat, drink and play sports. Valentino Rossi comes into the compeition with a 9cm height advantage Joe, but that seems to be offset a bit by recent events.
JOE ROGAN: That's right Mike. Rossi may have the height but Jorge definitely has the position. With the 3 penalty points that he was assessed for running Marquez ride Rossi will have to start from the back of the grid. That puts him at a tremendous disadvantage at the start of the race.
GOLDBERG: But that's not the whole story, as we've learned that Rossi has appealed the decision to award a penalty for a second time, but this time is it correct that he's asking the Spanish Inquisition not to kill him?
ROGAN: Well nobody ever expects the Spanish Inquisition Mike, but what Rossi has done is ask the appeals court to hold off on assigning the penalty points until they actually rule on whether his actions deserve them to be awarded.
GOLDBERG: So that's created two rulings.
ROGAN: Exactly, Mike. The court isn't scheduled to convene on the events in Malaysia until after the Valencia race, so if they rule if favor to postpone awarding the punishment until they rule on whether it's warranted that means that Rossi's starting position will be determined by his qualifying and that puts in a great place to strike.
GOLDBERG: Even if he starts from the back, Joe, he should have no problem breaking into the top 10 with that factory Yamaha screaming between his legs.
ROGAN: I think you have to pay extra for that, Mike.
GOLDBERG: I did, Joe, and didn't get change back. That aside, though, the game is very different from what it was in 2006 when Rossi had to fight through a sea of Honda's to get to the front, and that could work in Rossi's favor regardless of the court's ruling.
ROGAN: That's right, Mike. This time the M1 get through most of the rolling chicanes on the start/finish easily. Where he's really going to run into problems is when he starts hitting the customer bikes and Ducatis. The customer bikes aren't too far off the factory bikes, and the factory Ducatis will definitely put up a fight. If Rossi can at least get up to 6th behind where the Ducatis should be that would be a tremendous effort, but then will it be enough?
GOLDBERG: You know there's a game on the MotoGP website....
ROGAN: You mean the Monopoly game that lets you buy Repsol?
GOLDBERG: No Joe, this one on the main page lets you see who would be champion based on rider finishes and in 6th place Rossi could still pull it off if Jorge even comes in 3rd. So you have to ask how likely that will be.
ROGAN: There's no doubt that Lorenzo is having one of his best rides in years, Joe, to be in the position to clinch the title, and he's won here in 2013. But let's not forget that this is one of his bogey tracks as well despite being his home race. He's had a DNF here in 2 of the past 3 years, and you have to wonder how much that's playing into his head with the pressure to wrap up the championship.
GOLDBERG: With Rossi trying to leapfrog towards the front, he's going to have to buckle down and focus on finishing first and then get as high as possible, and that brings up the Hondas.
ROGAN: The Hondas are definitely the wild card here, Mike. In 2014 Marquez won it and Pedrosa rounded the podium. 2013 had them in 2nd and 3rd behind Lorenzo, and that was Marc's rookie year. The Hondas are strong, Mike. Dani has started racking up the wins and Marquez has never finished off podium here in the premiere class. But there will be tremendous scrutiny over Marc's actions during the race. Depending on your favorite conspiracy theory the fans will be looking for just how hard he races Lorenzo and Pedrosa and where he finishes. And scrutiny over Rossi as well, and just how cleanly he either fights to the front or, if he starts in his qualifying position, how he interacts with Marc on track. I don't imagine the Permanent Bureau were overly polite when talking about expectations this weekend.
GOLDBERG: You know, Kim Kardashian tried to "break the internet" with her recent photo shoot. Thoughts on what happens if bikes collide again on Sunday?
ROGAN: It will be carnage, Mike. Tremendous carnage. There are already rumors that Lorenzo may have jeopardized his position at Yamaha in the fallout of Malaysia, I don't even want to think about what would happen if.... I'm not even going to go there. Forget breaking the internet, it would explode!
GOLDBERG: Thanks, Joe. Let's get ringside, uh, trackside....
