so the BBC have listened to some stuff from the fans

Wednesday, 21st January 2009

The news that the BBC's MotoGP commentary team will remain unchanged for 2009 - when the channel will become the exclusive MotoGP broadcaster on British television, following the end of Eurosport's long agreement with Dorna - generated an avalanche of comments within the Crash.net forum, most of which expressed disappointment that some of the Eurosport team were not signed by the BBC.

Among the 260+ posts on the subject left since Monday were additional concerns about the BBC's commitment to MotoGP, in terms of the amount of live coverage it will broadcast from each MotoGP event and the channel on which it will be shown - prompting BBC MotoGP Series Producer Belinda Rogerson to send the following reply.

Belinda had intended to post directly in the Crash.net forum, but the length of her reply meant it could only be added in full within a news story:

"Having read my way through the various comments on the site I wanted a chance to respond to some of the points raised. The BBC team work hard to produce the best possible coverage but I also accept that it is impossible to please everyone with our programmes. I also want to point out that many of the posts are of a highly personal nature and I am not prepared to get involved in that discussion.

"BBC Sport are proud of their coverage of MotoGP and bringing premier class racing to a terrestrial audience. In 2009 we are expanding our coverage to include Qualifying of the 125 and 250 classes on Saturday alongside MotoGP Qualifying from every round on the red button. There will be live coverage of every race and in Europe MotoGP Extra after the race has finished giving further insight and interviews. That's around 7 hours of coverage each weekend.

"Our coverage attracts audiences of over a million with an approval rating that has been the highest for any terrestrial program in a given week. We believe the BBC team and the commentary team are key to that success and we look forward to another exciting season in 2009.

"Steve Parrish raced at the very highest level and Charlie Cox is an experienced lead commentator with a great passion for and extensive knowledge of motor bikes. We always review our coverage at the end of the season and I frequently read the comments posted on a variety of websites including this one but commentary is a hugely subjective issue and we believe we have the best team to lead our programme.

"In terms of presentation Suzi Perry has a wealth of experience from years of fronting motorbike racing and our pitlane reporter Matthew Roberts has worked as a journalist for Dorna for 8 years before joining the BBC and his excellent connections with the teams enabled us to break stories last year ahead of anyone else.

"We have taken on board feedback about the non-recordable nature of the red button when viewed on certain platforms and as a result we will be looping the Qualifying on Saturday afternoon and evening and will do the same with the races on Sunday into the following week. A timetable for this will appear on the website at the start of the season.

"The inability to record the red button is a Sky Box issue rather than a specifically BBC one
so we are doing all we can to enable you to watch the sessions you may have missed live. If you can get Eurosport then you will also be able to access the red button. Under the terms of the licence we can't turn BBC3 or 4 into a sports channel although we can use them occasionally and they are unavailable during the day as the bandwidth is used by CBeebies and CBBC.

"All broadcasters take the race coverage from Dorna and this is currently not produced in HD although I understand they are planning to do so in 2010. We took the widescreen coverage of the racing as soon as it became available at the start of the last season and we are always looking for further ways to innovate our coverage. I have a great deal of time for all the Eurosport team, I know them all personally and I was very sorry to see them go at the end of last season but this was a decision taken by Dorna and not the BBC.

"I am always keen to get feedback and to read suggestions as to what you would like to see within the programme and I will continue to read the websites and your views."

They claim that they have given the coverage to BBC because it's free to watch, which it clearly isn't because we have to pay a license fee. Now they are admitting above that "If you can get Eurosport then you will also be able to access the red button". Surely that defeats the entire object of the decision?

Hi,

What I was getting at is that she said that if you are able to view Eurosport then you have the ability to view the red button for BBC qualifying. So basically you have to have digital TV to be able to see qualifying. Dorna gave it to BBC so that it was free to watch for everyone but if you have to have digital TV to watch qualifying why didn't they just leave it on Eurosport? Obviously I have digital TV but it's not the point. The decision to go to BBC if you haven't guessed has well and truly pissed me off.

yeah crazy isn't it its been on the BBC in the uk for a few years all ready so why give BBC exclusive coverage they could have left it as it was Eurosport etc and yes u need digital tv for red button access so it will be

Sky Subscription.Freeview.Freesat.Cable TV.BT Vision ?.etc
its still on Sky if you got a old set up digibox and dish etc
with non subscription the free channels you get on Sky will still give you access to BBC red button

but by doing it this way Dorna and the BBC have shoved most of the motogp race weekend coverage onto Digital TV.

except for the motogp race which will be on BBC2 Terrestrial and digital BBC 2 & the red button

Well coverage of 125 & 250 qualifying isn't exactly a slap in the face, two words though "Jerez Test". It's a one off that wouldn't take up a regular time slot.

If speed/CBS was smart they would pick up the commentary team from Eurosport. That would be ....... rad

Your politics suck, but this is one thing I agree with.

People in the UK have no idea how good they have it. I could only dream of having qual coverage.

What the hell is the red button? That seems to be a major complaint among people over in Europe.

it can be a real pain to use/record Sometimes if a programme is usually on the red button like on Sky Digital TV.you cant just set it recording to DVD/VHS Etc you usually have to be there at the time the programme starts and press the red button manually to view it which is not always possible if your out/busy/work etc

most of the BBC's coverage for motogp is going to be on the red button

Using the red button

Digital TV makes it possible for you to do other things with your television join in with programmes, see extra news stories and sports coverage, check sports results, travel information and weather forecasts, even play games, go shopping, place bets and use email.

To go interactive, simply press the red button on your remote control at any time. Sometimes you will be prompted to press the button by an announcement in a programme or a red button logo appearing in the top right-hand corner of the TV screen.

Try our demo (opens in a new, pop-up window). This is a sample of the interactive service on Freeview showing users what happens when they press the red button. There is no audio.

You will need to have Flash installed to play this demo, which you can download free via BBC Webwise.

To use the BBC's interactive service just press the red button from any BBC TV channel for features including:

News the latest local, national and international news, and a menu of multiple screens for video updates, all available 24 hours a day
Sport up-to-the-minute sports news and results, plus a choice of coverage with extra live matches and alternative commentary
Information weather forecasts, travel reports and business news
Join in with programmes have your say
CBeebies games and stories for very young children

Interactive TV is available with any digital service, though the type and number of features vary according to whether you have digital terrestrial, satellite, cable or broadband.

Most of the interactive features currently available are provided by the BBC, Sky and the cable companies. A few other broadcasters, including ITV, offer a limited range.

What has people got against the BBC coverage so much?

Due to only getting Sky this year, I have been forced to watch it on BBC for the past few years since I started watching it. The commentary I actually don't mind at all and certainly doesn't put me off. And what's the thing about Suzi Perry?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>In terms of presentation Suzi Perry has a wealth of experience from years of fronting motorbike racing.

Suzi Perry I actually think is nice and getting rid of her I wouldn't like.

I think its the comm team we don`t like, but if you`ve followed the sport for so long then that pails into insignificance when you get drawn through the tv screen and create your own commentary.

YEP its the comm team lol.

i watch it on the tv and live stream from motogp but the volume on the tv is OFF

parish and the other comm are getting paid to do nothing in my opinion, parish usually tries to say what is going to happen on a certain and corner and is usually wrong....

its worse than listening to dennis taylor when watching the snooker, he says what shot a player is going to take before he has taken it and that is very annoying as i like to see what shot the player is going to take....

Explains alot..

Although I kinda don't hear the commentary when I'm watching

Will Eurosport be showing MotoGP this year or did the contract finish last season?
