Mladins utter contempt for anything DMG

Six-time Superbike champion Mat Mladin has held his tongue rather well this season, given how much he despises the DMG group and the new AMA Superbike rules. Mladin hasn't said much and about the only way you'd sense how he truly feels is by watching him take off the Daytona cap that was put on his head in victory circle at DIS and launch it with a quick flick of his wrist.

In the post-qualifying press conference yesterday at Fontana, series PR man Adam Saal asked Mladin for commentary as the Jordan bikes seem much more competitive at Fontana than they did at Daytona.

Talk a little about the progress being made by (your competitors) Saal asked Mladin.

"The gap from first to second is 1.3 seconds. I would not call that progress," Mladin deadpanned.

Talk about your bike, Saal asked.

"Obviously, the bike is just better than everybody else's, huh?" Mladin said. "That must be it."

I have said forever that Mladin took the theory that it was the bike as a personal insult. Now he is going to go prove it wasnt. And in the mean time, make a shambles out of this years racing.

I like Mladin. He wants competition, and has the thinking that insulting the others will make them try harder.

Nice try.

Mladin reminds me of a spoiled kid. He is not good for the AMA and I think they should find a way to get rid of him. He needs to grow up and channel his energy into helping the AMA. Find a way to be a bit more creative.

Sacky, I've been with you on this take, but this weekend I saw a different side of the man. I'm not sure what is the root cause but I did sense a change in his attitude toward the fans. He was actually fairly gracious with the fans and kids. He didn't look his old hurried self to get back into the trailer and avoid any contact with the people. After the podium ceremony, he walked very slowly to his hospitality tent, as he walked over several people came over and asked him to sign stuff and take pictures, and he did it while he walked...all normal right. But then when he got to his trailer he did a 180, came back out and then just started chit chating with fans and kids! Strange I know. So I full expected him to go back into the tent...but he didn't. He stayed out and kids kept coming up and he went down on a knee to check out the picture of a kid who was having trouble take a picture with what looked to be his dad's phone and was having trouble doing so. Then shock, Mladin took the kids phone and said, let me see that thing, figured it out, took a pic and then checked it again on one knee. It looked like a scene that you might see at a park. Crazy .....

You can look back at my posts regarding Mladin and you will see I haven't been very kind to the guy as his previous arrogance had bubbled to the point where I was disinterested in the guy. But I gotta tell you, I did see another side both Friday and yesterday. Like I said, I don't know, I suppose I could speculate, and if I did, I would say he may feel more at one with the fans since I did hear several mention their unsatisfaction with DMG. This kinda talk seemed to stroke Mladin's attitude into a more friendly person. Who knows really, it may have been simply getting some the night before...but then again, it might be a realization that the fans are actually on his side regarding their apprehension about DMG. All speculation of course, but I gotta at very least say what I observed first hand.

Hi Povol, still avoiding me at the track? Hahaha

Yeah, great post here. I actually reheard this take several times as I walked around the track. I overheard people talking about Mladin's comments from people in the stands at turns 3-7 as well as people in the seats above the pits. It's funny to hear people talk out loud what many other are thinking. Like I said above, this may be reason why I detected a kinder Mat with the fans. Who knows. But yes, he certainly must take this as a "personal" insult. Wouldn't you?

I'm with Jumk.

I really think the media are making Mat's whining sound 10x worse than it actually is. I've been watching tons of vid of the guy recently, and besides the hat chucking incident and the goofy faces on the podium at Daytona, the man has been choking back angry rants every time the press ask him a loaded question.

In the AMA coverage last night he was the only rider to do the pre-race interview with his helmet off and he was actually quite civil. He was also relaxed and civil in the post race interviews, and he didn't get pissed about Superpole.

Mladin is the king of cringe-worthy media conference, but for now it appears as though he's attempting to change.

Not only that, but (perhaps Povol also observed), Mladin said something in the podium ceremony that I noticed different in that he expressed what appeared to be a genuine rooting for Tommy Hayden. When the interviewer asked him about Tommy (who had passed him, led a few laps, even the start of the last lap); his response was along the lines that "If there is anyone I'd like to see win one its Tommy..." He went on to say, "but he's not gonna just let him have it." Mat goes on to say, "Tommy's had a rough couple of years but he's staring to show how good he can ride a motorbike. I sure you're gonna see more of him in the future." Uhm, say what? You'd 'like to see him win a race?' Uhm, hey Mat, that means he would beat you; are you actually rooting for another guy? I can't really say I've heard him say something like this. Make of it what you will people.

(Ah, I'm sure some of you don't believe me so I got it on film. I will post it on YouTube later when I have time).

Have you watched AMA Primetime yet?

I think this might be Mladin's last hurrah. His back was obviously causing him excruciating pain. Mladin may know that this is his last go round and he may be genuinely happy to have Hayden as a teammate. Ben was always eager to barge his way through or pressure Mladin into a mistake. If you watch Hayden at Daytona you can see he's a much different rider. He rides like Mladin's wingman and follows Mladin through on his passes to help further barge other riders off line.

It seems like Hayden rides more for the team because he's willing to ride easy until the last few laps. On many occasions Hayden could have roughed Mladin up by coming out of this draft and attempting a tight pass on the inside, but he chose instead to be patient.

At the beginning of the race I was yelling at the TV b/c Hayden looked like he might even have team orders not to pass Mat (that's how obvious it was) but by the last few laps Hayden was in second and closing rapidly. Maybe racecraft is more important than we realize in the post-Spies-AMA.

Me an another guy were talking this morning at the local Bob Evans about this. Never met they guy, but he commented on my Corona Extra Joe Rocket jacket (don't currently own a bike, but still wearing my last jacket), and asked if I caught the races. I told him I did not, and he started talking about the AMA and such. Never met this guy. Had to be in his mid 50's, had a Triumph in the parking lot. We spent about 2 hours talking racing, and got so loud, that they told us to move out seats to the back, in the smoking area or leave. He was at Daytona and told me how laughable things had become. He sounded like the fans Jumkie were talking about. They were all a bit confused about what the DMG was doing to the sport.

This is part of the reason there is contempt for what DMG is doing to the AMA. 1200cc Buells racing 600cc inline fours. This is a big joke. Where is the television coverage? It almost seems that they know how much their product actually sucks and what a farce the AMA is and refuse to show it on the telly. Read below.

Eslick's margin of victory was 2.5 seconds, but the gap was about six seconds before he slowed down to do his victory wheelie across the line.

Top finishers Eslick and Hacking were taking little jabs at each other in the post-race press conference. After the question was asked about what would it take to beat the Buell, Hacking commented that the biggest middleweight Kawasaki has is a 636, clearly making reference to the large displacement Buell.

Then Eslick jumped in and made mention of all the other Buells in the field that didn't finish up with them, effectively saying it wasn't as much the bike.

Why would the media want to make the star of their sport look like an .......? Usually they take a star an pump him up on a pedestal. And if they are problem children they get more free passes than a felon in jail.

I did catch the pre race intereview and I noticed that he had his helmet off as well. I told my wife when they were walking up to him, "Here we go, get ready for some smart ... remark and more hating on the new rule changes." Sure enough, he was a complete gentleman and offered a really good interview, and I looked like I didn't know what I was talking about. I told my wife that he had a hurt back and that he was on heavy medication and that was probably what was wrong with him.

I still stick by what I said earlier. Maybe someone roughed him up a bit and told him he needs to start pulling some weight, maybe even threatening him. Althoug if this happened it probably would have pissed him off even more and he would have been on a bigger tear.

Jum, if I didn't know you I would have told you you were full of .... if you told me that story. I guess there is hope for anyone. Ogusnki has said about the same thing about Mladin as well. In fairness to myself, my veiw of Mladin has been from what I have been able to obtain through media outlets and I said as much on that thread. Maybe I was wrong about him and I have no problem changing my opinion if he continues to treat his fans (especially the kids) and offer good, fair interviews. He owns the AMA he needs to start acting like a leader and not a big baby.

Same reason the same people boosted up Tony Stewart into a superstar. They might not be the biggest fan friendly people, but because they open their mouths and criticize the series, they are baddies, and the shallow race fans love these types of racers. The rebels. The one's who refuse to assimilate into the series' happy-go-lucky, robot attitude.

The difference is Tony Stewart is a star among stars. Kyle Bush is the demon of these days and yes, he is an asshlole sometimes. The thing is we have the good old boys to back it up and place a good face to the sport as well.

DMG will go nowhere with demonizing Mladin unless he draws it on himself, and it's not going to do any good for Mladin to carry on the way that he has as well. They need to suck it up and settle their differences and work it out. Act like adults.

Because Mladin sells. When Mladin "blasts" DMG, I try to read what he has to say. I'm sure they've noticed Mladin's tirades sell.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like he's ranting nearly as much as the press would lead us to believe.

I think Mladin is more of a baby than a leader, but I'm not seeing the big baby of years gone by. I'm not even seeing the big baby who was reported to be on an angry tear at the beginning of the season.

Drugs. Not illegaly or anything. You can't ever work around a bad back no matter what, so I'm sure he's popping pain killers among other things. It's the only way that I can explain it. Unless somebody actually got to him which I didn't think was possible

Damnit Lex, now it just looks like I'm copying you. Enjoy it while you can folks, this will be the final season of Mladin's career. I think he knows that there will be no winning with Edmundson and what the AMA has turned into is not something he's interested in continuing on with or helping grow. He's thirty-something and knows he has fans, I'd assume he's been polite because he wants to enjoy it as much as he can. He'll win the championship, proving that it's always been he and Spies and not Suzuki which is exactly what he set out to do and in doing that it'll be a middle finger to Edmundson and he'll be on his way. Back to Aus to sell motorcycles.

Mladin is the ...., no doubt about it. But you can't say it's %100 rider, that bike is damn good as proof by how many teams choose to ride it. But Mladin to hop on it after not even seeing it and win says a lot about him. He did say that he stole some setup data and track lines from Hayden (at fontana), the first humbleness that I have ever seen Mladin display. This is very interesting indeed.

No guys, I don't think Mladin will retire because of Edmundson. He may retire but I don't think Edmun can push him out, though it looks like he is certainly trying to eliminate descent with this latest suspension of Hacking. I'm gonna post the rest of my comments on the race thread since it was at the races that I learned several aspects regarding this issue and its politics & dynamics.
