For those not familiar with Spanish it says that Lorenzo will undergo surgery today at the Dexeus clinic in Barcelona despite him not being very happy about it, he couldn't wait until the summer break because there's still 8 races left until then.

This sounds a bit of a worry, with only 18 days healing time until fp1 at shanghai. It sounds like he has compartment syndrome, surgery for which as I understand it requires a skin incision(? presumably not very extensive in this case), and splitting the fascia covering the muscles.

Good stuff. Its certainly not ideal for him to need attention from Dr Costa after each race.

when Dr Costa talked to him in parc ferme i could imagine him saying "dont drink the carva, your under the knife in an hour".

what is the normal healing time for this operation ?

I don't think that's much of a problem. It's considered minor and if I uderstand it right many do it un the season. I've seen the result after a few weeks and it was hardly noticable. Two small 10mm scars in the underarm. He's probably soar the next race but being 99% during the whole race in sooo much better than being totally numb half the race. I developed the problem over my last few races and it was hell. I could hardly clutch and braking was really a big risk as I had no idea how hard I was pulling. The underarm hurted and was stone hard for allmost two hours after the race. Being a bit soure after an operation is something I would have choosen every time over that kind of pain and strugle.

I was specifically concerned about the next race, I am sure he will be fine after that. If they can do it with a small incision the skin wound shouldn't be too much of a problem even after only 18 days. I thought it usually took a few weeks for post-operative swelling etc to settle down but these guys repeatedly show that they are a breed apart. Apparently they have only done the right arm according to motogp.com.

Thanks for insight michealm, and babelfish. Times like this, we actually learn something

My sister in law had this done a short while ago. She was black and blue for a week and a half but could use the hand within a day with absolutely no pain. I'm sure the clinic is a damn sight better surgery than what is available to the average person and his fitness is top notch so no problem.

I asked australia's (and one of the world's) leading sports medicine physicians about this. The old surgical technique which involved a long skin incision for the fasciotomy had a 4-6 week recovery time but 2 weeks is apparently realistic for the current technique which involves much smaller incisions.

i was just saying in another thread where this came up about when krjr had the arm pump op. they said he had a huge scar up his arm which took time to heal. praise to the medical profession that have turned this into a minor op with keyhole scars.

I hope Lorenzo be able to heal 98% by the time MotoGp race in Shanghai. racing with Pedrosa, Stoner & Rossi.

There's an article on MotoGP's site that says he will ride in China and although he won't be 100% he hopes to be a top five contender. The doctor that operated said the condition was worse than he first thought, so surgery was the best option.

I am once again going to bring back what Lorenzo said. He is not shooting for the title but to Learn this season. Wonder when he will come out and say that the title is a possibility and that is his goal?

Rog, I think he is the business, and if he lifts the title this year, I wont be overly surprised. Impressed yes, but surprised? Nah!
