Lorenzo sees Stoner as biggest threat

MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo has tipped Honda's new signing Casey Stoner as his biggest rival for the 2011 title.

While Stoner switches from Ducati to Honda next year and Valentino Rossi leaves Yamaha for Ducati, Lorenzo will stay on to defend his crown with Yamaha.

Asked by Gazzetta dello Sport whether he feared the Rossi/Ducati or Stoner/Honda partnership most, Lorenzo said he believes Honda will give Stoner a quicker package than Ducati will provide for Rossi.

"As things stands now I'd say Casey/Honda [is the bigger threat]," said Lorenzo.

"The Japanese manufacturer is ahead compared to Ducati, but then everyone would say that after the Valencia test.

"Experience, however, suggests to wait for the first race of the year in Qatar. The red bike has great potential and has demonstrated that with Stoner these years."

Lorenzo also believes Stoner will prove to be a tougher long-term opponent than either his Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa or Rossi.

"Pedrosa lacks something in side-by-side racing, while Rossi... well, it's difficult to find shortcomings with him," said Lorenzo.

"I'd say his limit is age. He's been at the front for many years, and it can't be easy to be up there for so long. For sure, he's super-motivated at the moment.

"In my opinion Stoner has more talent than anyone else. The way he rides is impressive, but he isn't consistent, he crashes too much. But when he's calm and focused it's tough to beat him."

Former World Superbike champion Ben Spies is moving from the satellite Tech 3 squad to Yamaha's works team next year, and Lorenzo believes his new team-mate will be another major challenge.

"He's really phenomenal, but his presence gives me huge motivation," said the Spaniard.

Hogay trying to play pre-season mind games after winning his WC due to a great extent because 2 of his fastest opponents had f#c#ed themselves up through injuries. Rossi even screwed himself with a non MotoGP injury - he needs to focus if he wants to win again. Their fault - Hogay's gain.

Yeah, yeah Rossi's biggest downside is his age, but then if he thrashes Hogay for a season or 2, Hogay will be back to being one of the one time WC's.

The comments about Spies are just down right condescending and I'm looking forward to Ben looking down from the podium and smiling at the little prick.

Yup - Pedro is not the greatest of fighters - but .... when he takes the lead - it's a ..... to catch him - unless he falls off.

Stoner - Hogay's praising him is part of the dumb mind game attempt at Rossi - Stoner's not on my favorites list, BUT the display at Philip Island was some of the most exciting riding/ drifting I've seen for a long time. If HRC can build him a bike that works for him - he could be really good, but then they didn't do too well building one for Pedro until late in the season and Stoner is not famed for his ability to provide tech feedback.

With the sponsorship unclear for Yam and their lack of engine power - the only bike with less power is Suzuki - it's not a surprise that Hogay is already running at the mouth.

Yet more smelly brown stuff from this ...., & he wonders why even the spanish supportors still prefer Pedrosa.

I feel that he will be doing 2 things for all of 2011 -

Trying to stay ahead of tough nut Spies

Crashing trying to keep up with a rampant stoner

Stoner is twice the rider Lorenzo will ever be IMO & once Rossi has finished with him it wont let up as i think if they are on half descent machines Spies & Stoner will both kick his arse all things being equal. I am a little biased though!!

He has done well, but i still dont like him or should i say his attitude.

What did he say that pissed you off so much? He doesn't say Rossi is over, does he? He simply says Stoner is the big threat, and why not, the dude topped the charts on his first outing. What's so ungracious about that?

Did you miss this part?

"while Rossi... well, it's difficult to find shortcomings with him," said Lorenzo.

That means Lorenzo is saying Rossi is basically flawless, and if pressed, he supposes he could perhaps maybe possibly be a bit difficult the old one gets.

Evo, Ptk, Johnv, get a grip.

seems like a quite fair & balanced assesment.

Oh brother, and they wonder why they get jumped on.

HI Jum

Its just his attitude & the way he goes about things, he is the Alonso of motogp.

Rossi has the biggest ego but Lorenzo isnt far behind & just tries to be something he is not all the time. He seems to think that after being on the best bike on the grid & have all your hurdles fall at your feet whilst walking away with your first title makes you some sort of god, hell Rossi has loads & he aint no god either!

Dont get me wrong, to win at this level means you are that damn good and it wasnt his fault that his rivals had problems, he rode his hardest & won, what he is paid to do. Its all the other stuff.

Rossi has the history etc etc to back up his ego. Casey has the ..... card of being insanely fast on anything with 2 wheels, has beaten rossi and done all this on a bike that wasnt designed for him & knowone else could ride. That is a million times harder than what Lorenzo has acheived.

Hats off to the kid he is a champion & knowone can take that away form hm, but some of the ..... that comes from him is just ridiculous.

I think he must of read the book - How to make friends & influence people - and misunderstood it?

I would say from those quotes the boy ain't dumb....he know's he's in for a hellva fight in 2011.

Well dude, I guess I must be missing that attitude you speak of. I'll admit, when he was in 250s, he did rub me wrong, in the look at me celebrations and all, but I don't like them from anybody, and to date Rossi has done this the most.

I know you respect his title but I just don't see the bad attitude anymore. I don't thin Lorenzo compares to Alonso, who really is a big prick.

No. I demand you say he's a big headed .......! Stoner a threat? Well he's just the fastest guy on a reliable best funded Honda against a Yamaha who everybody says is underpowered, and very much lacking sponsorship. Lorenzo is crazy!

Dont paint me with the yellow brush Jum's coz it wont stick, nor will the red stuff either!

I just look at what i see are the different things that make up each rider.

Take stoner for example - Bloody fast but not too sharpe when under pressure on the bike & a marketing knightmare.

Pedrosa - Fast but just isnt bringing home the bacon, and boring to boot.

Rossi - Fast, marketing dream, best developer, history blah blah blah

Lorenzo - Not proven in developement, 1 title on the best bike, not universaly liked, bad attitude

We all know that they ALL whine when they lose, knowone gets out of that one so i dont think we can really include that one.

No problem brotha. But I'd say your painting Lorenzo is a rather interesting light that does emit a very familiar view by a particular crowd. Especially above, which basically says: Stoner, Pedro, Lorenz, suck, Rossi, good.

You've made your point already, try to stop being such a ............

I find JLs comments quite reasonable here

250's is where he started to go down hill for me, all the theatrics when he lost to pedrosa & the locking himself into the garage so the guys in his team couldnt get in etc etc.

He just has no respect but thinks everybody should be giving it to him, thats just the way he comes accross to me i guess. Things like the battle at Motegi for me are proof he has not grown up, but i think 2011 will force him to grow up, whether he likes the outcome or not.

I may still eat my words as i have done before as im not always right about anyone or anything so we shall see.I just get the feeling he will crash tryng to keep up with stoner & it wont be long at all before he is publicly slating Yamaha & saying there is no way for him to win due to the bike cry cry.

I never said he was sane.

Well the wya i see the parts that make these guys are things that i dont think i can argue with -

Rossi is fast but probably not the fastest, proven developer & has the history.

Stoner is most likely the fastest & can certainly ride almost anything like a luni but doesnt like the limelight

PEdrosa is fast and has been a title contender since his first season in 2006 but although he has the might of HRC & the money of Repsol hasnt brought them the title

Probably all wrong maybe but i see these as constants as they are proven in history, just like the championchips of Lorenzo & Hayden, even though some people still try to discredit both.

Of course you find them questionable, in fact you find anybody's comments "questionable" if they are not saying Rossi is God and we should all bow our heads in reverence.

Hint. I wrote 'resonable' not 'questionable'. Hopefully they'll teach you some more words in kindy next year

Lorenzo cops a lot of flak for his 'attitude', but it's mainly because he committed the sin of finishing in front of VR46 in a World Championship. He has his idiosyncracies, but we all do...
