Laguna v Indy

I'm hoping for some help and opinions...

Next year I have a wedding in Hawaii...and it nicely bisects both US races, being in early August. I have a sister in MN, and was planning on making it to visit her either on the way there or the way back as well. But now that I see that the provisional calendar may be helping me out with finally seeing an os race, I thought the opportunity may be worth investigating!

So essentially with my stops being as they are, both races are somewhat close to where I'll be, with Laguna being in the area of LA (I know its a distance, but I can fly into LAX on the way) and then Indy being vaguly near MN (again, I know it's a distance but not on complete opposites of the country) and then I can go home via Dallas or something. So essentially my question is, which would be the race of choice? Laguna always seems to be a better race, but people always rave about the atmosphere at Indy, and it would be pretty awesome to go to a track steeped in so much history.

Any views would be appreciated, I'll be honest and admit that I had to google maps of the US to see if this was even vaguley possible considering my geographical knowledge is so poor, hahaha.

Thanks guys

Urm... nevermind.

MN, NM, what's the difference?

Indy for the races, Indy for the party.

The problem with Laguna is that they are only racing Motogp, in Indy all 3 classes are racing motogp/moto2/moto3

If you have been following Motogp, we all know that the moto2/3 is very exciting comparing to motogp.

In Laguna, you have a great track, very accessible AMA paddock (AMA fills in the empty spots when motogp is not running)

Indy's track is HUGE.

MN as in Minnesota...

The land of 10,000 lakes. The headwaters of the Mississippi. Boundary waters canoe area. North shore of Lake Superior. The Mall of "Hysteria."

Never been to either of the tracks, or races at them, but if you need some MN helpful hints I got them for you!

Thanks so much for this guys, it's a big help. Appreciate it.

Baturro, I've been to MN a few times over the years and I gotta say that I genuinely love the place. I think it's got a great mix of sports, art and shopping. Made the mistake of visiting one winter and now always ensure that I come during the summer months
<

I try and get to a state or city that I haven't been to before each time I come over to visit my sister, this year it was Dallas so I figure Indy or Laguna sounds like a nice addition to my itinery next year!

Minnesota winters are the real deal!! Not many places can you drive across a lake in a truck, ice fish, build a snow cave and freeze your nose hairs inhailing -40 air!! Living in Spain for the past 7 years it is one of the things I miss the most.

I suggest the Indy race weekend. You get the 3 classes racing. And to me, from the outside, is seems much more "local" venue than Laguna Seca. It doesn´t seems to have the hype that Laguna has.

The drive from MN to Indy is a nice drive and will take about 10 to 12 hours. Cruize though Wisconsin dairy country, pick up some cheese. Madison is a cool city. Kind of like a "town" capitol with good atmosphere around the State st. Then Chicago is on your way. I´ve only been to the airport there. Couple corn fields latter and your in Indianapolis! Couldn´t be easier.

I've been to both a few times. All things considered, go to Laguna Seca.

Laguna pros: History, perfect weather (which means umbrella girls are half naked, big plus), great track viewing, grandstand seating is closer to the action, general paddock access, real GP track, extensive vendors, trackside camping (if you camp), track entertainment, decent city gathering with some options for partying, decent food.

Laguna cons: No lower classes (but AMA is the support class, which may be interesting to you if you've never seen).

__________________________________________

Indy pros: Lower classes, affordable VIP suite (only way paddock access available, ask me or Shovelhead for details), great city party, near by flat track (if you're interested), White Castles.

Indy cons: Crap track viewing (buildings block much of viewing), grandstand seating is far from the action, no general public paddock access, weather is unpredictable (my first year we had Hurricane Ike), track entertainment is limited, White Castles.

Thanks for that Jumkie.

Tbh the half naked umbrella girls isn't really a huge Laguna selling point for me (being female and all
<
) but if it means that the riders are more likely to not be bundled up in jackets like at Phillip Island cough Ben cough then I'm all for it! Thanks for the breakdown of pros and cons though, it really helps.

Baturro, I have been to Chicago before and loved it, I thought it was an amazing place. And I know what you mean about MN winters, I freaked out so bad when my brother in law took me out on a frozen lake, I was convinced I was going to fall in! Hahaha. I hadn't actually considered driving from MN to Indy, but that kinda sounds half viable. Could do a bit of tourist action on the way and then go to the race. Maybe I should just take my long service leave and go to both races!

I cherish the memory of my two visits to Laguna - 2002 WSBk and 2006 Moto GP. I have a vague recollection of something similar occuring in 2010 and 2011 but I can't be sure......on both occasions there may even have been something to do with a race involved?

Eh ? Race ? What race ? I remember a policeman getting arrested at our party

Two return tickets from Orkney International Airport to LAX please.

Drinking or non drinking sir?

I think we may have one or two.......................................

We aiming for GP mate, you up for it?

Was going to do miller for wsbk but since it's no longer on the calendar was going to do wsbk at guna instead.

Would do the gp but moto2 and 3 are just as important at a meeting for me as the gp is, so wont do guna for the gp.

Silvo is september will be a washout so not too sure about the party there next year either.

I know what you are saying, but a Mexican friend of ours has promised the trip of a lifetime. It sounds bloody good to us!

Agreed and a similar party to take place in september!

I don't know for sure what I'm going to do yet, no ties to work now.

I get made redundant on Friday coming so no longer tied to working whilst the kids are off school.

Oppertunities available and a nice fat 15yrs redundancy check!

Finances won't be a problem hahaha.

I've even sorted my visa to travel!!! so suprised I got one hahaha

Don't bother with Laguna. You don't get torrential rain, thunder and lightening, seven race starts and divine burgers like you at wsbk Silverstone
