Rossi is stuck in a really bad situation all around, imo.
When it comes to big business I think in a conspiratorial fashion. I think Dorna are trying to move him to Ducati by refusing to continue to subsidize his Yamaha salary. I think we all know how much Rossi is worth to Yamaha for branding purposes so I highly doubt they would cut Rossi's salary by 33% unless it was out of their hands. Furthermore, Furusawa is retiring so Rossi's guy on the inside will be retired after this season.
He's either going to be stuck riding Lorenzo's Yamaha development for under $10m euros, or he's going to let Dorna feed him to the lions in the Italian media.
He hates both, and I think he has no good options. I'm sure the Flamminis have offered him a boatload of cash on numerous occasions if he will make the switch to WSBK, I think that's what Burgess meant when he said that his future is up to Rossi. If Rossi goes to another team or to WSBK, Burgess retires. If Rossi stays at Yam, Burgess will stay on.
Not positive, but I don't believe any of the crap in the standard press. Rossi is riding SBKs and flirting with a career in SBKs to send a message to Dorna. He does the same with F1 and rally, and it's all designed to pressure Dorna into meeting his demands.
