There may be greats before, there will be greats after, but what matters to Jorge and everyone else now is beating the current great, not chasing after some historical figure or an unknown future opponent.

Nicky and Casey cannot yet be considered great, as they haven't been able to bring it to him on a consistent basis. Winning a championship, and then defending it multiple times is what makes Rossi great. Losing it and re-gaining again, at his age, against someone very obviously faster than him, makes it even greater of an accomplishment.

Did Jr. beat Rossi?
I didn't know that. Seriously, I stopped watching after 03 and only started again last year so I don't know.

FYI, I'm NOT a Rossi fan, check the avatar. But I acknowledge his accomplishments and understand why many other racers consider it an achievement to surpass him.

never thought of it that way. but i like.

He was beaten in 2000,his first year in the 500 cc category.
What a year...especially the hawaian outfit in Mugello!CLASSIC!

Krjr won in 2000, rossi came second. i was rossi's rookie year and he spent a fair bit of time throwing the nsr500 into the kitty litter.

No doubt Lorenzo would love to beat Valentino and it would certainly improve anyone's CV, however championships are championships.

Hayden and Stoner likely won't go down in the same class as Rossi and Doohan and Schwantz and Rainey etc. but they did beat Valentino. Maybe it's just me being a fanboy but I feel as though many dismiss the two for being lucky or having the best bike on the planet. Excuses are just that, they both have world championships to their names. Besides, Rossi has had his fair share of preferential treatment, top teams and top bikes. I alway find it humorous that the luck and bike excuses leveled at Hayden and Stoner are never thrown back at Valentino. As I recall the '02 211V was about as dominant a bike as MotoGP has ever seen.

I'm an admirer of Rossi's abilities, there aren't many more fun riders to watch on track. However some of the things that get said about him are so over the top it's absurd. I agree that Rossi's title win in 2008 after missing out on the two previous is a great feat. I won't argue that, he's the greatest rider I've ever seen.

Please, Rossi is 30 years old, what the hell does "at his age" mean, give me a break. Watch much WSBK? Ever heard of this guy named Bayliss? If so then you would know Bayliss was 39 when he won his last championship. Chances are he could still be winning this year at 40. With the ability that Rossi has, he is quite capable to be winning at this game for the next decade.

When you race against the best, you should be learning from the best as well. He's only 1.5 seasons into his MotoGP career at the moment, so I still classify him as developing. Let's not forget the dumps and bumps he took last season, that sent his mental fortitude development back a little. He just needs more experience battling Vale and the other contenders to fortify himself mentally. He's clearly not intimidated by Rossi. He just needs to focus on what he has to do to win races and let his talent do the work.
