“I think that Valentino is suffering a little because he never had to push on a full tank of fuel and new tyres and now he's trying to do that as a 34-year-old” - Dr Martin Raines.

Nice way of saying, when Valentino was winning 5 straight titles, there was no one who had the speed to make him races from the drop of the flag. He could lag back, burn off fuel, and more importantly, build his legend of comming from behind for the victory.

This has been my argument for a while: Vale's dominance had as much to do with timing as it did with talent. There's no question he was great, but JL would be racking up titles at the same pace if he didn't have Marquez to contend with now, and Stoner before that.

No question. Todays equivalent of  Biaggi or Gibernau would be Pedrosa, and he has more wins than those 2 combined.

Lorenzo would most likely be headed for his 5th in a row if not for Stoner and Marquez. Like you said, its all about timing, and Rossi had it in spades for the first half of his career.

I agree completely, but in years to come, do you think Lorenzo will be spoken of in the same tones as Rossi and Stoner, and likely Marquez?

I kind of suspect he won't, yet he definitely should be.

After the benefit of hindsight, I'm actually left wondering why people think Marquez is the next phenom and nobody else will ever win a championship as if last year was such a slam-dunk against J-Lo. It was nothing of the sort. I saw nothing from either of those two that made me think 2014 would be an easy win for Marc. Sure his riding style is super-aggressive and impressive to watch, but that's all piss and vinegar at the end of the day. It's all about who's faster on race day than the other guy, and Marc isn't consisently faster than Jorge.

I do. He is one of the the top riders that has ever graced the sport

Again, i dont think anything is a slam dunk for Marquez. He had an historic rookie year, where he broke many records, but that doesnt gurantee anything. He could easily come out next year and lay an egg by thinking he was the cats ... and good things will happen if he just shows up.I dont think that will happen, but it could. I   expect him to be better just by natural progression which is kind of scary, but at this moment, i would give Lorenzo the slight nod as the best overall rider. When i say slight, i mean slight. Like that could change at any day on any session. Its that close

Rossi won a WC on a 2 stroke. Nuff said.

So did numerous other riders.Lorenzo and Marquez won a WC on 1000's, something Rossi will never do, and he actually had a chance at doing so

Still has that chance. Granted the Rc211v was streets ahead of the competition but his 2005 yam wasn't. In fact him and Biaggi swapped bikes and , well we all know what happened next. The hate has consumed you to the extent you're tring to re-write history mate.

I think Lorenzo wouldn't have been talked about on the same lines, but this past season changed all that. He is now seen as the rider who valiantly took the fight to MM and HRC on an inferior bike, making magic on the M1 while his seven times premier champion teammate could only watch from a distance. If these MM-Jlo duels continue, and Lorenzo wins another title while slugging it out with MM for a full season, his reputation will grow even more.

Ultimately, MM's arrival means fewer titles for Jorge but a much higher rep. Look how many people have professed a newfound respect for JLo after watching him ride the wheels off the M1 to stay ahead of the Hondas.

You're saying he only won due to superior bike or no competition. Thats bollocks

No, thats pretty much a fact. In some years he had a superior bike, tires, AND inferior competition, but mostly it was inferior competition. I am really starting to wonder if he wasnt an underachiever considering everything that was stacked in his favor.

He definitely didn't have adequate competition during his early years, but that's no fault of his. Biaggi was his closest rival, if rival is even the right word, and he was hopelessy outclassed.

I just wish we could go back in time, pick up 2005 Rossi, and put him on the M1. What fireworks there would be then on the track...

Do you know what. We have been over and over this with povol so many times i just can't be arsed any more. He thinks in true republican debating style that if he re-posts enough times it will make it true. ""rolls eyes""

Rossi did do a lot and helped himself with starting how many races ? in x amount of years. without missing a race

thats not timing and luck. since he rode a bike at 5-6 year old like many in the race game he aint done bad

where others have failed .... 04 he didnt have to push ? jeez Dr Rains needs a Doctor Tel 464646

No one's saying Rossi isn't/wasn't a supremely talented rider (at least I'm not), but timing and luck definitely play a part. If he'd been racing against Stoner and Lorenzo instead of Biaggi and Gibernau during his title run, his world championship haul would probably look a lot different. And any motorcycle racer will tell you that it takes a little bit of luck to stay healthy in motorcycle racing.

Kenny Jnr. On a Suzuki!!!! Against Rossi on a superior Honda!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup. The good old days. Dont under estimate Kenny jnr, he was a great rider. Remember the time he nearly won a race on his dads TeamKR bike ? Pity his mis-counted the laps haha. Back in 2006 all us powersliders (wasn't called that back then) had our names put all over the TeamKR bike for a race. I think mine was on the tail piece.
