1979 what a great year!!!

Really and truly a great year. While as a "Yank" I was always happy to see Roberts do well, I was a huge fan of Sheene - really I think even before I ever saw a VHS of him racing, because I'd read about him. I remember seeing a piece on him in one of the American motorcycle mags and it showed him in the hospital along with pictures of his X-Rays and a photo of his leathers that they'd cut away from his body. They looked like a flayed cod. Totally blew my mind that he'd been through that and still went out and raced. Like I said, Americans rooted for Roberts, but I think everyone had a bit of a man-crush on Sheene. His not winning more championships was like the Beatles only making two albums.

Another thing that occurs... back then, or at least it's my perception, it seemed like the public had undiluted respect for all racers.

"Don't you wave at me young man!" :p

I remember the first time i got pulled over for speeding as a 17 year old kid on my RD125 and the traffic cops opening line was 'Who do you think you are? Barry Sheene?',he was all over the TV doing Brut 33 adverts back then, that was the start of a long career of speeding tickets from the .......s,i said to the missus the other day 'do you know i've had 22 speeding tickets in 34 years??'

Touch wood I've only ever had 2 and it wasn't from a lack of trying either. The best one that I never got booked for was on the M3 at 6am on a sunny Sunday morning after I'd had my 1st Blackbird breathed on, didn't realise the cameras between junction 1 and 2 were live. A copper turned up at my door a few days after and said we had you clocked at (it had to be estimated as the cameras do a double picture) 175+mph when the second picture was taken they couldn't read the numberplate hahahaha had a good laugh at that as he said you'd have lost your licence for a year.

I wish i'd only ever had 2,i've had 2 in the last 6 months alone, both in my car from sneaky hidden cameras,i have had a total of 7 in 13 years from hidden cameras here in nz, unlike in the UK where they actually put up warning signs that a camera is ahead here they hide them behind trees and in parked cars and you know nothing until the letter arrives in the post, i'm so sick of funding these .......s that i have just invested $1200 in the latest flashest radar detector on the market to give me some warning, when it goes off and i slow down and then cruise past the pig sat 2 kms further down the road the feeling is better than ....

The thing to remember was that back in the 'old days,' there just wasn't the medium for people to vent their opinions other than angry letters to Motorcycle News or face to face.
Which is why we see more vitriol on the internet. The detachment provided by the keyboard removes the imminent threat of physical violence, which, as a general rule is a great leveler and has an ability to naturally moderate heated conversations.

There were no Roberts hating forums back then?

A sad indictment on our times my friend.

Kenny was well liked over here - he rightful usurped the young pretender Barry and became king because he was better. However, Sheene's charisma allowed him to become the first and only household name in the UK which propelled the sport from the minority to the mainstream....for a while.

here you go. I said it.

And it doesn't have much to do with all the Marquez drama, on which I'm on no one's side if you're wondering.

I LIKE VALENTINO ROSSI. For the last two decades, he has either been the champion or the runner up on most years. He sure is overly aggressive at times. He sure doesn't give an eff about anything or anyone. He is an Italian, and as I'm a Pastafarian I shall feel a hatred against him for that, but I somehow do not (seriously guys, Italy is cool even tho I haven't been there for ages).

Valentino Rossi is a rascal. But I have been watching this sport for my entire life (I'm 327 y/o) and I have never seen a rawest talent, nor a more spectacular rider to watch on the track (sorry Casey). He is the present and future of the sport and sure as heck he'll win more than 10 titles. He set the bar at a level that no one may be able to reach, ever.

As we are just about to witness his annual crazy Texas ride, I thought I'd share my thoughts about him.

My point is: if you hate this champion, you are not a real fan of this sport.

To anyone that'd like to roast me: keep in mind that I REALLY hope Zarco gets the title this year. And maybe next year too.

Hahaha this was a solid post.

May be a bit of a myth but apparently before he became a household name Carl Fogarty was pulled over and asked if he thought he was Barry Sheene.

I guess it was a standard line back then to all the young kids screaming around on smoky 2 strokes with micron pipes all playing gp racer and trying to get their knee down on every roundabout like me..

Ha. Religious fanatasism at its finest.

How many other "I love ..... " titles are there lol.

Oh wait ..... in yellow forums I guess its every thread title.

And the boppers are just going to get angrier each passing years as their hopes of the promised 10th fade and fade and fade. If they were smart, they'd jump ship to the Justin Bieber camp while he still has some good years ahead.

Oh, the ironing....

Doesn’t it hurt a tiny bit inside that no one will know or care for weeks if you choke on some chicken tandoori and die a lonely death, Rajesh?

Proving my point. Make a light jibe and Fanatic Maggie zings back with threats of violence or wishing death on those not of the faith.

Maggie you were born in the wrong country. You would have flourished in the Taliban. Instead you're just another angry white boy on the internet making impotent threats. Maybe lay off the steroids?
