Really and truly a great year. While as a "Yank" I was always happy to see Roberts do well, I was a huge fan of Sheene - really I think even before I ever saw a VHS of him racing, because I'd read about him. I remember seeing a piece on him in one of the American motorcycle mags and it showed him in the hospital along with pictures of his X-Rays and a photo of his leathers that they'd cut away from his body. They looked like a flayed cod. Totally blew my mind that he'd been through that and still went out and raced. Like I said, Americans rooted for Roberts, but I think everyone had a bit of a man-crush on Sheene. His not winning more championships was like the Beatles only making two albums.
Another thing that occurs... back then, or at least it's my perception, it seemed like the public had undiluted respect for all racers.
"Don't you wave at me young man!"
