I Hate Summer Break, lets evaluate the first half

Im sure the riders dont hate summer break, especially Lorenzo, Pedrosa, Cal and Bradley, but hey, at least its just 3 weeks. Seems like a few years back it was like 5 weeks. Thats treading on AMA wacky.  Very interesting first half. Some are still whining about the racing, but it has had drama on top of drama. Mid season report cards

A+ Marquez, what can you say. Leading the points. Has podiumed 8 of 9 races with 3 wins. Was running a strong second on his only non podium finish. A rookie winning the title is startiing to feel real. Can there seriously be any doubters left.

C+ Pedrosa, mixed emotions about Dani considering he was the favorite. He has a hairline fracture compared to Lorenzo's surgically plated, bent, surgically replated, and has picked up 4 points on Lorenzo. When Lorenzo went down, i thought he would lose around 50 points to  Dani before he got back to 100%. That figure of 50 will be close, but he lost it to the guy who was running 3rd at the time, and is now leading the championship. Dani has failed to capitalize, period.

B  Lorenzo, another what can you say. Pure grit and determination. If he somehow pulls off the title this year, it will be one  for the books. Serious injuries, riding with excruciating pain, bad engine design, good power, questionable longevity.Finicky suspension that only likes cold weather. Dog days of summer coming, they need to figure out the tires.

C - Rossi.   I expected more.   Back on his beloved Yamaha, the 2 favorites  missing races and racing hurt just to grab a few points, a rookie makes the move in the points i expected him to make.

B+ Crutchlow. Did not help his cause at Laguna, but has been very solid. STFU and ride.

Lets look ahead to Indy then. First off, who's going?. I have been every year and this is probably it for Indy, so i will be there.

All of the title contenders have wins at Indy. Dani with 2, and crashed out of lead on another. You could say he has the best history  and should be in position for a really good points  day. Lorenzo won one when Dani crashed out of the lead, and Rossi won the inaugural monsoon race, but really hasnt been up front since.Of course Stoner won the other. That leads us to Marc, he has dominated the track with 2 wins in Moto2 and was leading the 125 race when he went down. Its not a must for one of them to slow down Marquez at Indy, but winning is contagious, and they might look up a few races from now and  realize that waiting on him to .... it up might not happen. Good season so far, i have no complaints. The only thing that could be better is if Stoner announces at PI , that he is returning full time to  Moto GP in 2014, i dont even care what on.

This stoner comeback story has become a fantasy. Which like most fantasies, i fear, will never happen. But oh god just imagine Marquez / Stoner / Pedrosa / Lorenzo epic battles, with Crutchlow / Bradl / Rossi on in ambush. Oh, and a Spies riding on an official Ducati surprising the hell out of everybody.

Yeah this is total fantasy...

Agreed totaly fantasy, a surprise from Spies which is anything other than negative is very hard to imagine. Plus it's rare enough that the top riders we have already are similar enough in pace to have a battle that lasts more than a lap or two, the chances of getting that with more riders is even less.

Would still be great to see though... provided they are battling for a distant 2nd behind Cal Crutchlow... this is a fantasy afterall!!

Marquez has been super impressive. His style is great to watch as well.

Muliple titles coming his way for sure.

Lorenzo can still win the championship but will need a little luck.

Showed what a tough little bugger he is. I got to admit I have great admiration for not just his courage but his skill.

Pedrosa is also courageous. But he better get himself fit quickly.

Because if he can't beat Marquez this year, I don't see him doing it in the future.

Rossi has been largely dissapointing. I imagined he would be quicker than he is on the Yamaha.

After Assen I thought he was back, but not sure he is going to be able to beat the other 3 aliens when they are fit.

Even Cal has given him a hard time.

Crutchlow has had a very good half year on the Tech3 Yamaha. Laguna wasn't a good weekend for him but he is at least more consistent these days.

Good luck at Ducati though ;)

Bradl - Coming on in the last few races. Has he had some upgrades because Bautista has as well.

Has loads of talent but is no marquez.

Bradl's bike looked really good at Laguna. While we were watching, i told my son in law, look at that damn customer bike pull the factory machine, if Marquez gets him, its not going to be on the gas, it will have to be on the brakes.. That bike had legs, and looked pretty damn good everywhere else.

I agree with your grading povol for the first half of the season

You have everyone within a plus or minus of where I would

place them.

One other thing is that Honda has upgraded the sat bikes to

podium level now. Cal is not alone anymore for a spot on the

podium. Among sats that is.

Why is it always down to the bike finally being upgraded when a Satellite rider starts getting results. Don't you think it is more likely the rider has got his .... together after being threatened with being shipped off to Ducati and they are all automatically gaining two positions thanks to the mistakes of Pedrosa and Lorenzo. Any other weekend, Bradl would be fourth and Crutchlow would be... oh .....

I was speaking of a mapping upgrade that is now much closer to the full factory map

If we only take the straight away speed at wide open throttle during the first of the season

and compare them to the speed in the last 3 races. AB and SB both have more speed

when judged against the top riders today than in the first 6 races. Granted 2 are amiss.

There has also been a flurry of Honda techs in the garage area in the last few and my

conclusion is that they are remapping those engines for more performance.

I do not dismiss the danger of losing his position (SB). He was requested to meet with

Honda directly after podium by himself and without his manager. If it was only a pat on

the back you would expect the manager to be present. So what was the meeting about?

To be fair, as far as I understand it, Bradl had some persisting front end troubles that they seem to have finally cured with different hardware. Since then, he seems to have picked up speed. Not unlike Rossi. And a slow white Honda is still a slow white Honda.

Am i the only one who hopes stoner just goes away?  The dude just complained so much he annoyed me haha.  thats just my opinion....

Anyway,  Good post povol.

I hope marquez continues to impress and eventually wins the championship, it would be a great story for the rookie to win.

Rossi has to pick up the pace.  Jorge needs more luck not to injure himself.

I think that pedro seeing marc up there is going to affect him mentally.  Marc has done in his first season (so far) that pedro has been trying to do since '06.

Marquez | A- | He's been an A+ rider in 2013, except for Mugello, where he managed to turn 20 points into 0 points.

Pedrosa | C+ | Pedrosa was an B+ through Assen, and he was nursing the championship lead. At Sachsenring he managed to turn his strongest track into a DNS, and he was demoted from 1st to 2nd in the championship. Incredible blunder considering how badly he needs to win a championship.

Lorenzo | B- | Jorge was an A during the first two rounds, before trouble struck. At Jerez, he left the door open for Marquez in the final turn. He whined about 3rd place. Lorenzo followed up his mistake with a choke at LeMans, followed by whining about the tires. Lorenzo collected himself for 2 brilliant wins before throwing it down the road at Assen in dodgy conditions. Assen is a strong track for Yamaha. Serious blunder, and he only salvaged a B- with his epic ride at Assen with a broken collarbone.

Rossi | B- | Rossi is an inconsistent performer this season. He has a win and four podiums, but he rarely shows up for qualifying, which compounds his slight lack of race pace. He choked at LeMans, and a poor qualifying performance contributed to the mess in Mugello. He's been beaten by either Crutchlow or Bradl in the last two rounds. He's probably more of a C performer this year, but I do think he is developing so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Crutchlow | B | At most events Cal has been an A performer, but he choked at CAT and LAG, and he has managed to get himself embroiled in silly offtrack drama about Espargaro or Yamaha or whatever.

Bradl | B | Perhaps B is a bit generous. Bradl started off very poorly with 17 points in the opening 4 rounds b/c he couldn't find a setup in preseason testing. Bradl turned things around by Italy, and he's scored 4th, 5th, 6th, 4th, 2nd in the last 5 rounds, while leading a score of laps in the last 2 rounds. Leading races is a big deal, not just for the sponsors and the talent scouts at Repsol Honda, but also for his confidence and mental strength.

Dovi | B | Dovi is making the most of a bad bike and a bad situation. He beats his teammate almost every time out. He's only 3 pts behind Bradl, despite the inferiority of the Ducati.

Bautista | B- | Alvaro has been a consistent runner on a 2nd tier satellite Honda with Showa suspension. If not for crashing at Laguna, directly behind Valentino Rossi, I'd have rated him more highly. Bautista is riding the 6th - 8th best bike (depending on Tech 3 form) and he finishes 6th-8th every round.

Hayden | C | Beaten by his teammate at almost every round. Crash at Catalunya and inconsistent performance throughout the season. I'm still hoping he can somehow scrape together a deal to ride a factory-supported Honda for a nice swan song, but WSBK might be a better use of his time.

Smith | D | Hasn't shown any real pace on a competitive bike. Progress is slow, and he's injuring himself frequently as he learns. He jumped into the deep end too early, but if he strings together a good run in the 2nd half, perhaps he will save himself a spot in the paddock.

Pirro | B | Test rider is beating the two regular satellite riders. Good form on a bad bike.

Iannone | C | Bad bike and he's injuring himself while riding uncompetitively. He needs to jump to Tech 3 ASAP. He has pace. MotoGP needs for competitive non-Spaniards to have decent equipment. Yamaha need to keep as much young talent around as possible. Rossi is old. Lorenzo is talking about early retirement. Crutchlow is no spring chicken. Smith is not fast. Espargaro is a decent plan for the future, but they need as many fast people around as possible.

Spies | F | His career suffered a serious blow in 2012, and he needed to stay near the sharp end to have any chance at extending his career. He signed a 2-year deal to ride a satellite Ducati, and now he's slowly recovering from a badly injured shoulder.

Jorge was amazing in the two races prior to his wet fart.

Assen race gave him something a championship doesn't (legendary status).

If Jorge has a similar second half to the season without the falls he will be premier class champion for the 3rd time.

BTW, by how many points does Rossi trail Marquez?
 47 i think

I had to check, its 46.

THis sport is for horse jockeys .  Tires are made for the shorties, as are the bikes and their brains.   Rossi still has the talent, he's just to big.

I'd like love to see Melandri take Bautisa's seat, or even on a Yamaha.

Dovi is postponing vacation to test more "upgrades" at Misano tomorrow, although he seriously doubt it can do any improvement.

Rumors are that Marlboro is yet to sign a deal for 2014.

Ducati should at least make a public statement about their situation, what the hell are they prepping for 2014? and about 2015? Where is the ....... new engine, lighter and more compact Preziosi was talking about already in the start of the 2012 season? Their silence is so hurtful for the fans, even more than their pig performance.

.... Audi/Ducati can't give fans a single account for what the hell is going on.

Man..... I bet annoying ... Hayden is gonna sign with a CRT team just to piss me off.  The turd is milking it for all it's worth.... sucking the cow's ..... dry.

He's just following his compatriot's example.

A couple of references to masturbation and a few cuss-words (is that the Kentuckian vernacular?) and we'll know who's been giving him career advice.
