How Much Is Marquez Sandbagging?

The Golden Rule of racing is to win by the smallest margin and there is nothing wrong with that. I have just watched the LeMans race again and was blown away by the ease he was able to make up time on the leader. 6 and 7 tenths of a second per lap while in traffic is a tremendous advantage to have in any motorsport.

I found myself wondering if he had been instructed to hold back some of his potential speed and only use it if need be necessary.

Could be wrong, maybe there was a timing glitch or he was just lucky on the drafting. However I feel he is holding something in reserve. A lot of something.

I doubt he's been instructed to, more he's choosing to do it - the lad's not thick.

Perhaps theres an element of him emulating his childhood hero, Rossi. Remember PI 2003 when we all found out just how much Rossi had in reserve back then?

Indeed, everyone including the riders thought a 10 second penalty would be more than Rossi could overcome. No one could believe he had 15 seconds on the entire field.

Only he knows what he has on the field. He came from dead last twice to win in Moto2 and thats a 30 plus rider field. LeMans was not a timing glitch, he was running faster laps than the leader while coming through the field, sometimes by 1/10th , sometimes 6/10ths. Actually ran off another time but hardly anyone noticed he was coming so fast.He doesnt have the gap that Rossi had, but Rossi wasnt racing against anything like Rossi, Lorenzo,Pedrosa etc:

I was going to bring this up....Rossi could probably have destroyed everyone at each and every race had he not like to take a chance and actually race his opponents while he was on the Honda.....

Honda make great bikes that allow almost anyone win on them....Rossi just choose to have fun....but when he needed to destroy the field he could and would.....

How many time did Rossi set the fastest lap of the race on the last lap?

My point is that sandbagging is part of the fun of racing....it is just that some people would rather see the leader clear off in the distance.....but that is boring....Casey for instance a lot of the time won by disappearing into the distance ... Boring...

MM learned from the Doctor how to win, make it fun for the fans and enjoy yourself doing it.....

Even at the height of his dominance and Rossi fought for the win and lost plenty of times. Eg: he got beat by Ukawa at Welkom 2002 by 1 sec. when the SNS wasn't available.

I believe that it's not so much a question of sandbagging rather than one of superiority through flexibility. he knows he could probably escape early and win it. but he also knows he can just wait in second for two thirds of the race, analyse his opponent and make his move for the win. and he knows he can beat anyone in a straight fight. he simply chooses which way is suited best to the given situation, and maybe his mood. he has more options than his opposition, also in terms of which lines to choose (Pedro noted after catalunya that MM was so difficult to overtake because he would change his lines and braking points from lap to lap. this is also why he almost rear-ended him). MM has just many more options compared to his opposition, which is what makes him so strong.

I agree...I actually think MM is bored and is hanging back just to get a bit excitement in the race for himself as much as the fans....MM has taken every page out of Rossi's book on how to be a great champion, winner and love the sport.....and I bet Rossi loves it....
Lets be honest we are going to be talking MM and Rossi and JLo for a long long and we will be happy to have seen them race live in out time....while other champs / winner we wont even remember....
So enjoy MMs antics and great race craft!!!

(Can you believe though that some people still thinks he cheats to win?)

Of course he's cheating, he's on a factory Honda. [emoji6]

there are to many checks for him to be cheating unless Honda are slipping notes in ezys pocket lol.

the rcv is clearly the pakage to be on...... it and marquez are in perfect harmony

I don't think he is sandbagging at all. He's been pushed a few races this year. We are just witnessing a prodigal talent. the repsol ride doesn't hurt him none

Sand bagging absolutely. Anyone who swims across the finish line during a wet race is definitely a sandbagger.

How much is he sandbagging? We don't know because none of the others on the grid can put enough pressure on him to give us a clue. It makes no difference what position he is riding in during the race he is still in total control of the pointy end. Eight races in and not a single rider has put any pressure on him.

Of course he's sandbagging.

Yeah but he was racing a Ducati in the dry..I'd rather race the Hindenburg around Assen than that Duc, would probably turn better too!

He wasn't sandbagging when he nearly dropped it after changing bikes.

come on man he was 4.5 seconds back made that up in 4 laps. the kid is amazing. the swim was perfect at the end. i think he is planning his celebrations now much like the NFL.

bottom line best rider on the best bike makes for 200 points.
