Honda to miss Suzuka Eight Hours
January 23, 2009 - 7:34PM
Honda said on Friday it would scale down its motorcycle racing activities to cope with the economic crisis, skipping this year's Suzuka Eight Hours endurance championship.
"Our works team will not participate this year. It may come back next year," a Honda Motor spokeswoman said of the July event.
Honda in December also announced its shock withdrawal from Formula One.
"We are continuing to supply machines to other teams," the spokeswoman said about the Suzuka race, where roughly half of the motorbikes used are manufactured by Honda.
The company was reviewing its motor sports activities in general but "will not quit the MotoGP," the spokeswoman said.
The Sankei newspaper reported on Friday that Honda would withdraw from, or scale back its participation in, all motorcycle races except for the MotoGP.
Honda participates in more than 10 motorcycle races a year but the company does not disclose the costs.
It regained the Suzuka title last year thanks to the Japanese-Spanish duo of Ryuichi Kiyonari and Carlos Checa.
Two weeks ago Kawasaki announced its pullout from the MotoGP.
