Ducati's technical director Filippo Preziosi believes the team has made 'the right choice' by signing Nicky Hayden after the American completed a successful first test for the team at Valencia this week.

Hayden, who was fastest of all on the wet second day of the shortened test at the Spanish track, impressed the team with his bravery and his swift integration with the engineers.

"He certainly is very brave," Preziosi told Italian newspaper Gazetta dello Sport. "With the telemetry you can see that in certain situations the bike wobbles in a scary way, even more than with [Casey] Stoner, but he doesn't get off the gas.

"I think we've made a good choice."

Speaking of Hayden's relationship with Stoner, Preziosi added: "It looks like from the first moment there's been great accord between the two of them, also helped by the fact that they speak the same language.

"I don't know whether it'll be the best rider pairing we've ever had, but for sure it will be very harmonious."

Preziosi also indicated that Ducati were happy with the first run of an evolution engine used in the carbon-fibre GP9.

"We were a bit afraid," he said. "Here we had an evolution - never gone on track, not even with test rider [Vittoriano] Guareschi - of what Casey tried in Barcelona.

"Even on the installation lap he did to prepare the bike for the riders, Vittoriano told us it was a good step forward. Most of all in smoothness and progression.

"Casey liked it very much too. The power is still the same, because that's practically imposed by the limitation on the amount of fuel. We've worked on the usual things: fluid dynamics and reduction of frictions. We'll see if it's enough."

And a quote from Julian Ryder

"Release that breath you've been holding, Hayden fans, he can ride it."

I'm not really a Nicky fan, but after the way he was treated at Honda and the class he's shown in dealing with it, I really hope he does well at Ducati. This quote says it all for me, but it also makes you wonder what type of telemetry Melandri was producing? Sounds like Marco (though I like him) has no balls:

I really like Marco and think he's one of the best in the field on his day. But this reminds me of his Yamaha days when Rossi told him to get a Honda ride since it would suit his riding style better (as in an easier bike to ride).

I was wondering how the hell Povol became the author of this thread just as I was writing it???

AND that's MY title too!!! Nonetheless, let the Melandri/Hayden debate begin.....................................

yeah sorry about that, Im still new at this stuff

No problems with that. I'm more interested in Marco's Telemetry compared to Hayden's. Let the debate begin...............................................

I can't remember where I read it, but somewhere a while ago Ducati were suggesting that the bike had to be overridden to perform properly.

If overriding the bike is a barometer for success, Nicky should win every race next year.

I've never seen anyone ride a Honda so slowly when trying so hard. If the Ducati can convert Nicky's zeal into speed we may be on the brink of witnessing something truly amazing from both Stoner and Hayden.

I'm still somewhat cautious though. Nicky is very picky about feel from the chassis. He's not out of the woods yet, but it the initial indications seem positive.

I still hope he can find some time at Jerez. He's still way off the pace in the dry.

Not really a surprice from what I've seen from Hayden before. He has been outstanding in some of the most scary parts of tracks MotoGP can offer.

I'm sure that's true but what does that say about Marco's telemetry? To be honest, what does it say about Marco?

It says exactly what we saw ......

Marco stops riding when the bike got anywhere near the "ragged" behaviour, in which Stoner rides the bike. Hopefully Hayden will ride it in that zone also.

I have the feeling that Nicky Hayden move to DUCATI is the right one. Will keep our fingers crossed.

I've been one of the 'good wishers' of Nicky Hayden on the Ducati so Preziosi's feedback pleases me no ends. Hope Nicky can get close to Stoner's perfomance levels soon.
<

Then we'll have a Ducati 2009 dream team...!

I will submit that in the 60's & 70's, that when American racers grew up in grand national doing both road racing & dirt track, that they learned a flexible style that allowed them to ride like Pedrosa, or Melandri on one hand, or like Stoner or Hayden on the other. Don't forget they rode the 250 strokers too! Riders like Lawson, Roberts Sr., Spencer, Schwantz, Rayborn could ride either style as required by the bike, weather, tires, etc.. Non-American examples of riders who can do this would be Doohan, & most notably Rossi. With the demise of multi-discipline racing you've now got the superbike/dirt-track venue, or the 125,250,gp line of development. Riders seem to develop with one talent or another but not both. Pedrosas style is the antithesis of Haydens, but it is very fast & probably easier on tires & machinery. The good superbike/dirttrack guys don't mind the bike bucking, slithering, & sliding they have the experiance & comfort level to give the bike its head. Somtimes its the fast way, and sometimes it's not...

Unfortunately we have one or the other with the current crop of riders.... If Nicky can't shake & slide he's nervous, If Marco can't keep the wheels inline he nervous!

Bring back the multi-track grand nationals!

Agreed, but it also makes you wonder when silly season takes place what criteria are used. Example: Elias (back to Gresini and he resumed his crappy performances after contract time), Nakano to Aprillia (I'm sure his pal Rossi had something to do with that). Based on the performances of those two this season one would think they were crap. But to be honest, maybe the telemetry shows exactly what they can do if given the chance on "equal" machinery.

The paddock knows who can ride, but the politics don't allow them to get the best machinery?

On the other hand, I think Marco has played his last card with Kawasaki cos I don't think he can develop that bike. I hope I'm wrong......................................................

To be continued.....................................................

I think that's the nicest thing you've ever said about Nicky. Was that so hard?
