dumb ...

Moto GP championship leader has revealed that he turned down big-money moves to Yamaha and Ducati to stay with Repsol Honda in next year's championship.

Hayden re-signed for Repsol Honda last Friday, despite admitting that he had been in discussions with their bitter rivals Yamaha over a move that would have netted him 3.5 million Euros (£2.4 million) a season – 1.1 million Euros more than he now earns.

The 25-year-old American said that the idea of partnering five-time world champion Valentino Rossi – his Honda team-mate in 2003 - did not appeal to him.

Hayden said: “Yeah, I spoke to Yamaha. If a company like Yamaha make you an offer then you have to talk to them, and I'd had a few issues with Honda so I did consider the offer.

“At one point, I thought it would be the end of my time here, so I talked to Valentino about teaming up, and he liked the idea.

“Let's face it though, you know exactly who is going to be the number one rider with him in the team, and that did worry me a bit.”

It is believed that his new Honda contract was only agreed after the company promised to retain its current line-up of engineers and guarantee him at least joint-number one status alongside team-mate Dani Pedrosa.

Hayden revealed that Ducati also made an offer, which would have seen him team-up with Italian Loris Capirossi next season, but that he never really considered it.

He added: “You know what you get with Honda, but with the Ducati option, you don't really know.”

i love that he said he didn't go to YAMAHA cause he'd be #2 behind Rossi...hell he's gonna be that with Dani!...

Well, I actually see the logic with not going to Yamaha....after all...Nicky and Rossi have been partners before at HRC....and bottom line, the real brains at Yamaha are going to follow the 7-Time WC any day of the week.....

What I'm truly disappointed with is that he turned down Ducati...I think he could have learned a ton from Loris.....but its clear that Duc would love an all italian bretheren......

as a "ryder" (hehe)..i'd say hell yeah stay with HONDA, cause no dought they will have the best bike as they always do...but if the reason not to leave was because he didn't wanna be the 2nd "rider" on the team, then thats just stupid...cause he will be, as long as Dani is Honda's golden boy..i think Nicks about to have a rude awakening next season...especially if he doesn't bring the #1 plate to HONDA...

he should have gone...

Could be....but limiting tire selections and with an unproven V4 design....Honda could be either made or broken by the new regs....in my mind Yam is in an equally good possition for 07 because the m1 is proven...just lower displacement....the gearbox will be crucial.....

I'd have taken the Ducati ride, it seems to be a fairly difficult bike to handle, only Loris seems to be able to do so effectively, and I think Nicky could manage it. Plus correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't Ducati excelled in all the 800cc tests so far?

yup..the Duc has been 1 sec or even less off the 990 pace...i think it would have worked well with Nicks ryding style....but oh well, we'll never nkow i guess...

The Honda is basically a cylinder taken off the old bike. The power characteristics are similar according to Pedrosa. So everyone is going into unpreoven territory with the new tIres and engine displacements.

They are all similar to the engine layouts now. The engineers are trying to make the chances of messing up minimal.

Yeah, that's exactly why Nicky would have been great with Duc, he rides a bike really well when it gets upset and jittery.... but its water over the bridge now....I just hope he didn't burn a good opportunity....we'll see I guess

Don't think "......." is the right word to use there, Hamer... Try "smart ......." instead

Which, IIRC was a cylinder added on to the 750 V4 RC45 or whatever it was callled.... Anyone else think the big H is working backwards here?

dumb ... in the scence that if he thinks there's gonna be a "joint-number one status alongside team-mate Dani Pedrosa "...that plain stupid..he's gonna loose out to Dani in that issue...hence "dumb ..."

I think you guys are missing some things that Nicky had to consider. First off, think of Makoto. We all know that he has the ability to win races. We saw this ability in 2004. He just can not run well on Michellin rubber. Nicky would not only have to learn a new bike but also new suspension and rubber and also with new people around him. Plus his ridding style is very hard on tires, trust me, I have won races because of guys ahead of me slidding around too much and fell off of thier lap times at the end of races. Second, Colin came from a superbike background like Nicky did and has openly said that he had to change his ridding style to suit the M1 and he is still not getting the greatest results. Third, Honda will soon realize that Pedrosa has weaknesses, namely water. Pedrosa can not and will not ever be able to race very well in the rain. Simple physics says that he has less weight to push the tires through water and onto the track surface in rain.

Also with the yamaha ride, think of what is happening right now in world sbk. Ducati is winning the tittle with bayliss, but Bayliss' teamate IS very fast. Lanzi is just the #2 ridder and Ducati wants a championship more than anything so they will spend all thier resources on thier #1 rider to win that championship. They would not this problem if the Ducati was more competitive, but its not. Like the M1 was not competitive earlier this year becuase of the chasis.

Nicky did the right thing in my opinion.

And if it's true that he's got it on paper saying Honda can't ..... him up and focus on Dani, he can put them up to thier necks in legal ..... I say smart ........ Besides, it's still Honda, they got therecouses to have "two number ones" IMO
