Does Miller have the capacity to overtake Dovi?

I've always wondered why Ducati continues to get beaten by Honda. I am a Dovi supporter to the core, but its disheartening to see him lucky to get second race after race. After watching Undaunted, I feel like his heart is more in motocross than it is street. After watching Miller's performance at Jerez, do you think he has the grit to become the new Team Ducati favorite and be a bigger threat to Marquez?

Miller still has a bit to learn about tyre conservation. All to often he chews up his tyres and has nothing left for the final sprint to the end. He is improving though. I think the promotion validates him and he will be a constant podium threat this season. Just gotta make that next step....

I imagine they are already giving Jack full factory equipment, but if not they should do so and that might help. I also don’t really know anything about the quality of his crew vs Dovi’s.

On evidence so far including the most recent race Dovi is still better at preserving his tyres/having pace at the end of races.

Stoner's thoughts ...

“I think one thing he does have to understand is that that factory bike isn’t going to be a massive step above what he’s already riding,” explained the 34-year-old.

“That’s one thing with Ducati; (regarding) their satellite bikes and their factory bikes, there’s not a whole lot of difference.

“What will be different is the support he is going to get. They’re going to be there listening to every word he says, and the development will move in the direction maybe he wants, which is really, really good to see.”

couple of thoughts:

Honda was not beating Ducati... Marquez was beating Ducati (and everyone else).

Dovi can manage a race better then any other rider on the grid, hes not the fastest, hardly a threat in qualifying, but knows exactly how to manage his bike and tires so that he is in contention for a podium (or win) at every race.

As for Miller, hes faster then Dovi, but he still needs to work a little on tire management. that said, if he can qualify on the front row (and he was on pace to do so last week before crashing at the end of Q2) he will be in a better position to manage those tires by not having to battle his way to the front of the pack.

I am new to the world of motorcycle racing. What is the significance of tyre preservation?

they have different compounds of tires (hard / medium / soft / rain). softer tires offer more grip but wear out sooner, harder tires have less grip but do last longer. Riding style and use will also effect how rapidly they wear out.

I take it someone riding casually like me along the coast doesn't need to factor this in? Crazy how a MotoGP rider will go through a set of tires in a race, but mine will last over 10,000 miles

street tires and race tires are very different
