Because the gap from Dovi to Pedro to Stoner, and the gap from Spies to Lorenzo, and Nicky to Rossi is miles, right?
Well, actually.... Dovi and Spies do quite consistently show that they are not as fast as their team mates, both in qualifying and in race finishing order. Now I don't want to take anything away from either one, but in the ultra competitive world of motogp racing, these differences do amount to miles, figuratively speaking.
The comparison between Nicky and Rossi is less direct, because with all the work going on at Ducati, they have rarely been on the same equipment all season I think. Nicky performed better the first half of last season than Rossi did for the first half of this years season (he also outperformed Stoner in the early part of 2010), but then again, that was his second year on the Duc. The Ducati is apparently very, very hard to set up properly. I think part of Hayden's relative success with the bike last year came from stopping the search for a good set-up and just riding the thing as hard and fast as he could. Somewhat like Abraham this year. But if I'm brutally honest, I think herein also lies the reason I believe that Nicky simply isn't as good as the likes of Stoner, Lorenzo, Pedrosa, and, much as it pains me to say, Rossi. Because I think Hayden simply does not have these guys capability of setting up a bike to perfect race trim. Because even if the rides the wheels of his bike, be it a Ducati or a Honda, in the current field, he is likely to finish 4th at best.
