Dakota Mamola, the 15-year-old son of MotoGP legend Randy Mamola, will contest at least nine rounds of the 2010 British GP125 championship.

The Barcelona-based Californian will race for Team KRP, which gets support from Bradley Smith, who became Britain’s most successful Grand Prix rider since Barry Sheene in 2009.

Dakota will contest a minimum of nine British championship rounds and four in the popular Spanish 125 series, though he may yet contest all 12 rounds in the UK if he is mounting a serious title tilt.

Smith, who will ride for the Aspar Aprilia squad again in 125GPs this year, “said: Dakota Mamola joining the KRP team means a lot to me.

"I am nervous because we have become good friends, but more than anything I am excited because Dakota has great talent and now we’re part of the Mamola history. How exciting is that?”

Team boss Mark Keen said: “It’s fantastic news for 125s and racing as a whole. He has a famous family name, but he brings with him his own talent, focus and passion. He’s just a good kid.’

Randy Mamola won 13 MotoGP races between 1980 and 1987 and is one of the most successful riders in history never to win a world title. He was runner-up four-times.

Excellent news, it's always good to see new blood coming into the sport, especially when he has a pedigree. Looks like he's used to the podium already!
