Most notably Barros at Mugello and Capirossi at Sachsenring----those were the two places they actually worked.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out the old 990 tires never went out of production; especially since the 2007s were not good in extreme heat and not everyone could ride them. When they did work; however, the 07s were unstoppable.

I think it's probably likely that they had plenty of 990 material lying around. I'm sure they make blank carcasses before attaching the compounds. It seems likely they could have had plenty carcasses remaining.

What do you think the MSMA tried to do when the reduced the capacity to 800cc and eliminated 1 liter of fuel? The governing body are limiting performance by means of heavily restricting the equipment available for use.

The governing body is already limiting top speed and corner speed and everything else because bike performance advances more rapidly than circuit safety or equipment safety. That is the nature of the era we are in.

Why are we ruining the diversity of equipment AND reducing performance with an antiquated approach to roadracing?

I'm not enthused about a top speed limit, but when you think about the results, it seems much better than what we have now.

Are production bikes limited to 800cc? Are they limited to 4 cylinders? Are they even limited to 4 strokes? MotoGP has become a traveling circus/laboratory for the Japanese manufacturers. What other culture would dump millions of dollars into the endless inefficient refinement of an existing technology?

The rules are very much a reflection of the MSMA and the culture that runs it. The rules are old-fashioned and intolerant of major innovation.

I've got no problem with the Japanese banishing parlor tricks from motogp like auto gear boxes, but for God's sake, they need to allow innovation in the most fundamental area of all motorcycle design---the art of mating engine and chassis in one harmonious machine. If you severely restrict engine design by controlling displacement and fuel you aren't developing anything but marketing fluff.
