Bridgepoint to bring MotoGP and WSBK under one umbrella

MotoGP and World Superbike owners Bridgepoint have today announced they are to bring the two series under one umbrella and it appears that Dorna ringmaster Carmelo Ezpeleta will run the show.

They will be integrated within the Dorna Sports group but managed as separate events with a view to enhancing the two distinct championships. The objective is to apparently to allow both series to develop and enhance their championship personalities, retaining their leadership positions in the arena of world motorcycle road racing. WSBK, with its focus on production-based racing, and MotoGP with its focus on prototype racing.

At the same time, both championships will benefit from joint marketing and commercial strategies. Infront has been appointed as marketing partner and global advisor to both championships.

"We’re very excited to have the two top motorcycle road racing series under one roof. We fully expect to develop and strengthen the distinct nature of both MotoGP and WorldSBK as separate properties and remain committed to working with teams and manufacturers, circuit owners, sponsors and broadcasters to give fans the best experience yet," said Ezpeleta.

Here we go. No problem with wsbk out-teching moto 1 I guess. And the EU were worried about F1 and gp bike racing (which was thriving) sharing ownership.

To be honest it is hard to argue that it is sensible having 2 series with bikes close to as fast with technology which is getting similar in the current economic climate. Doesn't leave honda with much bargaining position aside from quitting altogether. I suspect the tech regs for 2014 will be announced fairly soon.

Translation, World Super Stock will now masquerade as WSBK, while WSBK will masquerade as Moto GP.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends

We're so glad you could attend, come inside come inside.

Well, here is another one "expert media" got wrong.

Both series were already corrupt, but at least Wsbk provided some exciting racing. Now its all WWF on steroids. Hey, maybe now Carmelo can have Rossi ride for both series on top factory. That will boost ratings, eh?

Expect to see Wsbk get much slower and defanged of all its appeal. They just put a snake to guard the hen eggs.

first logical step to kill off one of the series.

to be honest i wouldn't mind wsbk with more stock-style rules, that one of the series has got to go is obvious given how sophisticated wsbk is getting and motogp taking a step back in performance in the near future (which i don't mind as long as it serves to make it more of a riders championship)

I'll go for

Crp to be named moto1 asap

moto2 to stay

wsbk to become Crp/moto2 feeder

moto3 to drop down to national level CIV.CEV.BSB.AMA Etc

affordable racing

talent spotted

Classic businessmen ...., the kind of businessmen Povol votes for despite him not even realizing it. Capital investment company takes over two rival companies, one strikes a deal to destroy the other.

actually not a bad idea.

i hear so much .... about gps only being for midgets, but IMO thats just because the feeder series for motogp favor the short and light guys.

moto3/125 in national series, wss/moto2 style bikes as smallest gp class, wsbk ,then motogp

or,and this would be my wish, new calender for wsbk that is more spread out over european winter. keeps the off season shorter

They can't make money out of thin air and keep on spending money they don't have like the people you vote for.

Smaller guys with talent will trump bigger guys with talent in bike racing, its physics. Just like big guys with speed, will trump little guys with speed in stick and ball sports.

Spending money they don't have? Hahaha, hey, I have a 'new' idea, lets never raise taxes but get into wars for the .... of it, they are free to conduct right....like the people you obviously vote for.

And this deal, its about making money our of destroying rivals. Can't beat them, buy them, then kill them off. Bain capital anyone?

The most likely outcome, for 2014, is that WSBK will come closer to AMA/BSB rules, rather than the silhouette class it currently is.

To be fair to MotoGP, WSBK has been creeping further and further from its Superbike roots till it is barely recognisable as a production-based series. MotoGP hasn't really had anywhere to go, being already a prototype class at the top-end of development.

The other thing will be a more media-friendly WSBK. I am sure I would watch it more often and subscribe to a MotoGP.com-style viewing package if the coverage was better. I like going to the races, but find the TV coverage to be a yawn.

YMMV.

The law of unintended consequences.......breakaway series by the manufacturers coupled with a refusal to supply hand built Superbikes for WSBK.

100%, you and I must have the same crystal balls.

Costs have to go down somehow, the grid has to fill up, more bikes have to be competing for the podium, and if that can be done by curbing the sophistication of the machines in some key areas, why not.

It's not a technically free formula anyway. Two-strokers can't race, 5-cylinders can't race.

Spec ECU has done good to F1, why should it be bad for MotoGP.

It's much more important sticking to a given set of rules, without changing them every year.

The manufacturers won't walk away, they have nowhere to go. They'll negotiate hard, sure, but they are going to stay, and some that currently are out may even come back.

Haha J4rno. Dorna are as interested in keeping down cost as they are in safety. But hey, they got enuf buyers of their ........, so they'll keep on selling it.
