Backing the wrong horse?

Who remembers this advert? This to me showed the arrogance of HRC and it has bitten them on the arse. No Rossi in the HRC champions line up, but Dani ready to step up to take his rightful place.

I've been a long time HRC fan, whether it was the mighty NXRs in the Dakar or following Doohan's career, I've always admired their engineering and relentless chasing perfection. But come on, this was a bold statement to make!

Nice to look back now and think that the "no show" Rossi took 2 more titles since this was made, and it took getting Stoner on the bike to get a WC.

Ever feel you backed the wrong horse Honda?

I know it's the off season & I haven't seen a race for a week or two, but boy Dani is bigger than i remember.

Was this a print media job or tv? Never seen it here in Oz.

Also how much influence did Repsol have in the ad? They are aching for a Spanish premier class champion after all.

Never seen this ad before. The guy in the gut section of the pants is too small to recognize. Maybe it's a Honda engineer? It sure does seem to confirm their attitude that it's all about the bike and not the rider, as the add indicates that their all the same with interchangeable parts.

I recognise Pedro, Nicky, Creville & Doohan. The last one on the right is too small. Anyone with better eyes or memory have the answer?

Honda can't use Rossi's likeness for advertising without permission. If Rossi is riding with Yamaha, are Yamaha are going to give him a contract that allows him to appear in Honda advertisements? Furthermore, this is a Repsol ad, and Repsol were probably pushing Dani as the rightful heir.

But if this is a Honda/Repsol/Pedrosa bash-a-thon, please continue

Good comeback.

But how come Honda can use Nicky's image when he rides for Ducati?

It's a tiny image, but by the leathers, the fact that it's a Repsol ad....Sito Pons in his Campsa gear (Campsa got rolled into Repsol)

Good points actually, but you are right, I was just using it as an excuse to bash that wee spanish rat. Now Stoner has gone, we need somebody else to pick on. Although to be fair, I never liked Pedrosa.

Yeah, pretty sure it's Pons.

Is it just me, or are the pictures in this ad possibly not in the correct scale with each other?

You would think mick doohan should be rather taller in this company, which would still apply if they threw in casey stoner as well.

Perhaps it's Taddy Okada - doesn't he still work for HRC?? I took the other figure at the back to be Spencer - which means ther's no Gardner.

No its your balls.

Come on, everyone knows Honda always do it their way and consider their bike better than the rider. Criville in that pic looks a bit like Stoner if you squint

Not sure if you're just fishing in the off-season, Pete, or you pulled this out of your 'meant-to post-it-in-2009-when-it-was-actually-relevant-file' for a laugh. Anyway, as others have said, it's a Repsol ad, not an HRC one--you can barely even distinguish the HRC patch on their left shoulders--and the reasons for Rossi's absence have also been explained. It looks like a simple 'Repsol's proud history of associating with and supporting champion riders.' Of course, Pedrosa's titles (like Pons') are in the smaller capacity classes and he's actually out of sequence. Moreover, representing Hayden as a figure of the past (when he was still riding for the team) is more than a little awkward... Still it does explain why Hayden has never been able to return to his 'winning' ways: Pedrosa ate him.

But Rossi left Honda, not the other way around...

Of course, if you want to talk about missed opportunities, by going with Pedrosa, HRC were also never in a position to get Lorenzo when he came into the MotoGP class... that's another 2 titles.

Seems like you're reaching there... since it's not even 'their' ad, and there's no sign of the all important bike. The little guy in the gut ( I can't make him out, either) must be someone sponsored by Repsol in the past, who was (probably) a World Champion. My guess would be Ricardo Tormo, although the few pictures of him riding I found showed Ducados or Malboro sponsorship.

Er, are you two taking the piss?

Ain't it some sort of Russian babushka doll act.

Ding, ding... we have a winner!

He does, or did--not sure if the new Moto2 team he's involved with has any HRC affliliation or not. I don't imagine it would be Gardner or Spencer, since Rothmans not Respol were the title sponsor back then.

But if it's Dani-bashing y'all want to indulge in, try these photos:

OK, I can handle being called out for being a Pedrosa hating, Casey hating bigot, but you have gone too far here you ........ I am ....... livid that you think that I or anyone else on PS.net would fall for your insidious and downright offensive lies.

That was not a USB fan, that was Repsol trying to recreate the old Marilyn white dress photos to get Dani to appear attractive to Nicky loving Americans. Sadly, health and safety and human rights for dwarves have made the photo shoot less sexy the those Spanish oil .......s intended.

And to balance things, Repsol tried a similar ad with Casey Spencer, but the combination of the white dress, flash and his unfeasably large teeth, the finished picture looked more like a total eclipse than the intended new sexy Freddie.

Peace
