Dovizioso is the No.2 rider. There's no ambiguity about it. He was picked over Ianonne because he'd make a more reliable No.2.So Ducati make it plainly obvious that Dovisioso is the 2nd rider, great way to engender loyalty after he helped them develop the bike. I really hope Dovi can beat Lorenzo.

Ducati may have a shot at the title with Lorenzo in 2018. They sure as hell don't with Dovizioso. This will be his 10th season in MotoGP and his 8th on a factory bike. And he's got two wins to show for it, both in the wet.
As much as I like the guy (and I really do) he's never displayed the kind of consistency required to fight for the championship. Lorenzo has and given that Ducati has paid a fortune to bring him on-board, making him the lead rider is to be expected.
Similar situation in the Honda camp, where Marquez is No.1 and everybody knows the score. Only Yamaha is playing it evenly since its fielding two championship contenders on the M1.
Italian. Fairly quick (relative to the field). Loads of development experience. Provides continuity. And (unlike Ianonne) has an even temperament, both on and off the bike. You are right, perhaps I should have said Dovi is seen as Lorenzo's boot licker, why did they even involve him in the advert for the bike, it was so obvious they liked the idea of making him look like shop soiled goods and of course if you are going to do that why not replace him with someone else.

Can be relied upon to be, if not helpful, at least not a hindrance to Lorenzo's and thereby Ducati's title hopes.
Can also be relied upon to not make a fuss if Lorenzo, a five time world champion signed by Ducati for a colossal sum, gets more attention in the opening ceremony.
