let it be up to the riders, if they are comfortable using it, then use it. I think there will be some benefits, especially with practice and testing, and letting riders know when they should come in for a bike swap.

I take your point about letting the riders run their own strategy. But, I would hope that the first point will not be a problem as professional MotoGP teams should be able to hold off talking on the radio until a point where it's suitable.

They say that in F1 it looks as if drivers are being talked to when cornering, etc., because the radio is delayed for broadcast.
 
They can set the speaker to only "speak" when the bike is standing up on a straight, just like the flags. Team sends the message, the device downloads it and store to just release the message the next time the bike is standing up. As those bikes know where they are on the circuit, it's possible to integrate both systems. Advantage will be that a longer message can be sent and the rider doesn't need to seek for his board at the edge of the straight.

I don't doubt that wither, but when race control is sending a message to all riders at once, some are inevitably gonna be cornering

That's precisely why I think this is a horrible idea. Part of the challenge is guys being out there on their own.
Flag-to-flag has produced some of the best races ever.
Like when I was in the stands watching Marc go from 14th to win on slicks at the Sachsenring in 2016 on a dry line that was maybe 5 centimeters wide.
Or when Brad stayed out in the pouring rain in Austria 2021.
Or when Pedrosa won from a pit lane start at Valencia 2012 with Nakasuga in 2nd.
 
It's an inevitable development IMO, like motor vehicles and elevators. I am wondering why it has taken so long. Perhaps because it likely needs to be wireless technology that has to work reliably under the prevailing conditions riding a MotoGP prototype in anger.

In American football, the coach can talk to the quarterback via a speaker in the quarterback’s helmet…….HOWEVER….if one quarterback has a technical issue and communication is not possible, then the opposing quarterback and coach have their system turned off so they cannot communicate. Will this be the case in MotoGP if one team cannot communicate to its riders?
 
Now, where have we heard this talk before ????

For me, absolutely no way should radio communications be allowed or exist in MotoGP or for mine, any sport really as it removes so much of what makes sport (individual and team) great. Radio comms will remove the individual aspects such as an individuals capability to 'think on their feet' and strategise based on their 'feeling' of how the day is playing out or to choose how they want to react to another competitor's own strategies.

In all likelihood, we will instead see games of 'follow the leader' called over the radio rather than observationally by the rider, as we have seen times when a rider 'blinked' to soon or to late which resulted in an interesting outsome.

Fark no ................. FFS, go back to good old pit boards or cardboard signs but please no radio.

Where some can say safety and creating awareness of accidents, we have flags for that and a system of lights could easily be applied on a bike's dash with the lights based on GPS and flashing yellow 2 sectors before an incident with green at a clear sector etc.

Microphones capturing rider comments. Not commentary but more it would be very cool to have microphones to pickup if riders talk to themselves, 'abiuse' others under their helments etc during the race. Kind of a 'fly on the wall' look and couple it with heartbeat, blood pressure type of stuff to capture the exertion and impacts to the riders.

For mine, it would be interesting to capture the personality of the rider during the 'combat phase' of a raceand how quick they recover
 
I believe that it should be possible to track the status and positions of riders and bikes, and give automated warnings of riders who are off their bikes and on the track. This should be possible with real-time speed far greater than with humans noticing the situation and flags being shown. If this is the case, which I'm assuming - it needs to be tested, then I would support at least this use of radios. Seeing people on the track with riders narrowly avoiding them is something that scares me.

Personally I believe that MotoGP will continue the implementation of radios in any case, because radio messages have become part of 'the entertainment' for F1. And, Liberty Media will be motivated to do the same in MotoGP. Please note that if MotoGP is to be expanded as Liberty wants, then the target new audience will not be us, but other groups of people who aren't yet watching MotoGP. They will be different, and the strategies for selling MotoGP as a product to them will be different.

At the end of the day, it’s a team and not an individual sport. Pit boards and gesticulations are established efforts to communicate with the rider during the race. Developing tech to allow radio communication with the rider is a natural progression. It’s now 2024, so what do we expect?? It could well improve safety too and will definitely add a new dimension to the racing.

Pretty much nails it imo.

I don't see the benefits of this except getting some soundbites to post on X for everyone outside Brazil and North Korea.

It doesn't add to the racing but it takes away from it because riders are no longer out there on their own and will no longer make strategy decisions by themselves.

Hofmann once said they already tested a team radio when he raced way back when and he almost crashed every time his team radioed him.

They could also improve safety by just having yellow flags flashing on the dashboard.

That's only cool until someone gets fired because they said something politically incorrect that a sponsor takes offense with in the heat of the moment.
